  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Started painting my 53 motoryacht with Sterling original Hatteras white and the color was so far off I contacted the seller I bought the paint from and they sent me another gallon free, but it turned out to be the same wrong color. Seems closer to the new Hatteras white not even close to the briteside Hatteras white. So I guess the boat is going to be painted a new color whatever it is, more like a greyish white instead of a cream colored white. Love Sterling but beware, John

Why not take it in and have it custom matched. Also West Marine has two Hatteras Whites that don't match mine but they are close.

I actually have the mix requirements for the Awlgrip hat white, but as long as I am painting the whole boat I will just stick with the off the shelf color from Sterling so hopefully I will be able to duplicate it in the future if needed. John

I know for a fact Sterling can blend it and they will name it with your own name so that they can duplicate it. To warn people that way isn't really fair because this happens with all paint brands same name but different shades through out the chart common problem and you should never assume it is the same.

I used Sterling for 20 years but made the switch to awlgrip easier to get and the shine holds out longer BUT no ones paint flows like Sterling

Good luck

I read your PM and replied. Forgot to add send photos. Also what years?

For posterity, as we are getting some sterling paint to fix up a few items and have been looking into it.

Sterling has a "Hatteras White" and a "New Hatteras White" to choose from.

If the boat was never painted I can't see why 40 year old paint won't match the new stuff.

Maybe hatteras used the wrong color in the beginning?

I have the same issue matching awlgrip to old faded paint and gelcoat.

Dan, you said that "no one's paint flows like Stirling". Explain please as it can imply that it's more prone to runs on vertical panels. I'm having my 1982 MY painted and I need to decide on the paint to have the yard spray. I am leaning toward traditional Awlgrip to match the original color when it left the factory. I want a really glassy look but I don't want runs or sags.

Sterling stays open and flows longer than others. If applied correctly has less orange peel.

Any paint applied wrong will run. A good paint job has no runs.

I used there Hatteras white, not the new Hatteras white and it does not match my old paint, however briteside Hatteras white does match my old paint. If you look at my boat pics in my gallery the boat has been painted with the sterling above the rail but the hull is still the original paint, you can see the difference, we are currently painting the building of t he hull the same sterling color. John

Don't know if this helps, but the manual for my '73 calls the hull colour Matterhorn White.
John

That is interesting because I use Matterhorn white on the kids sabots at our yacht club and it is no where near the Hatteras off white color that most of our boats are painted with, it is closer to the new Hatteras off white. John
