I am looking at a vessel with 8V71TI. The surveyor has identified several things that require gaskets, plugs (oil leaking or weeping), hoses and such. Which outfit would you recommend to get these parts? The surveyor mentioned internal rust in one of the 32V alternators. I called around but no luck so far. Would appreciate any recommendations.I also need a good service/repair and parts manuals.. I see a few on ebay. I would interested in a digital manual also as backup.. Nothing online that I can find, so far.Thank you Streff

I was using diesel pro due to the ease of finding parts on their website. Lately, Stewart and Stevenson (diesel dash) has been good and the phone support has been decent as well. Could be another place local to you as well

Your local Detroit Diesel dealer will have any part on the engine. DD parts availability in my experience has always been light-years ahead of CAT, MAN, or most of their competition, they had a hiccup during COVID (a lot of people did) with supply chain shortages caused by all the dockworkers' union strikes, but aside from that one time period that lasted about a year, I've never had an issue getting anything I needed on a Detroit within a day or two.

I see some people have mentioned DieselPro and they also stock every part on the engine, plus they offer much cheaper than factory prices. But there's a catch. All their stuff is made in China to a quality control standard that is generally a bit less than OEM parts. Sometimes this doesn't matter, but on some things like seals and gaskets, I've read where a lot of people have been displeased by the poor quality of the rubber that doesn't seal as well and they end up having to do the job over again to put in a factory seal. I have also heard that DieselPro's QC has gotten a lot better in recent years, so YMMV.

If you buy the boat, you will like those engines. The 71-series in particular are the best engines DD ever made IMHO, they have a dry liner design so they last forever. Those are good, reliable, cheap boating.

Thank you very much for the great information. I sent a list to the local dealer who was not sure if they had the parts and needed time to look for them. Diesel Pro were very helpful and had 80% of the parts (which are mainly gaskets and plugs) but now I am not so sure now re:quality. One pf the alternator 32 V has internal rust, a new one is not readily available.. still looking.. maybe I will need to get a Balmar or such with an adjustable voltage.. One of the raw water pumps has corrosion where the hose attaches.. I will clean that before getting a new one. Streff

I’ve used diesel dash several times with good results.

Well, I had downloaded all the manuals and parts catalogs for the 8V71TIs from boatdiesel.com, but since they are no longer online, I'm not sure what other sources might be out there. Many of the responses on the recent Boatdiesel thread (Boatdiesel ?) seemed to imply that all of those items were readily available online from other sources. Maybe some of those guys will chime in here.

I have some of the 71 series manuals I downloaded from but I cannot seem to post a file on this forum. If anyone knows how to do this or if the moderators would create a place to load these I would be happy to share. I just renewed my subscription to Boat Diesel before they folded but managed to get these.

I had been subscriber to boatdiesel for 6 years, the previous boat had Caterpillars and I downloaded a few files for it. When I started looking at Hatteras vessels, I tried to log in boatdiesel to browse, download stuff or just read the threads about the 8V71’s. Initially, I thought the site was down for maintenance.. Was very surprised to learn that it is gone forever. Too bad, it was a great resource. I would be willing to purchase downloaded manual from any forum member(s). Please PM me to chat. I have been looking on ebay but the majority of the paper manuals seem to be for highway, not marine, engines.I recall finding a site in Australia that may have some digital manuals..I just have to find them again. A few links to 8V-71 Service manuals that I found online. None are Marine Specific, but they all give you a good outline of what to be looking at so far as I can tell. For what it is worth, this is all new to me as well. :)

Internet Archive - Detroit Diesel V-71 Service Manual (OCRed)

Marine Diesel Basics Archive - General Archive - 8V71 manual (directed at fire truck, but has a good OCRed manual)

Many can be found by searching google for "Detroit-8V71-ServiceManual pdf"

Hope this helps. :)

Now - if anyone has an Allison M20 manual PDF - I would love to find that unicorn! :)

I asked and AI bot about the manuals, and this was another suggestion.

Here is what the menus inside the Allison HUB and online sales websites look like for those that don't want to waste their time registering. Based on what I am seeing here I don't believe an EPUB subscription would yield access to M or MH series manuals either.

"AI" is just regurgitating what it can find on the internet, just like google search always has. It can't infer anything it hasn't read and it can't read behind paywalls. :)

I should have also posted this link to the Parts Manual - fully OCRed as well.
