Didn't want to hijack Rickysa's thread on gift ideas for the holidays, but this one is sort of related (hint, hint to the "admirals" out there)...what are your favorite boat movies? Broad criteria would be anything featuring a lot of water, I think.

Two I'd put to the top of the list would be "Das Boot," German WWII submarine flick. Some of the cinematography was outstanding, and the drama was white-knuckle throughout. Original was German w/Engl subtitles, but they later release the Eng-dubbed version and called it "The Boat." Great flick.

And, of course, "Perfect Storm."

I think Captain Ron came out the winner, but there's a lot of other good one's in there too. Since that thread's about a year old maybe there's some new one's we can add.

We've watched Capt'n Ron so many times the kids yell out "CHICKENS" when they arrive in St. Pomme de Terre....and Kitty's response when the idea to bring the boat back is mimmicked daily by my wife :p ...great fun movie

Pirates of the Carribean. "Why is the rum gone?" Great movie, great acting.

The question today is where can you go (online) to find really good movie reviews and ratings? We are soooo tired of researching and then bringing home crap which we thought was going to be a hit (and sometimes in the form of two or three movies)!

Capt'n Bill

This year's INVINCIBLE about the 1976 Philly Eagles football team, because that's my car in the opening credits (& elsewhere to the trained eye)!

Oh... yeah... this is about boat movies... well the GS & the Whaler used to spend their winters side by side in the garage.

Does that count? Kind'a like the Kevin Bacon game, maybe?

Best boat movie goes to "The Russians are coming The Russians are coming"-- Great scenes with the bullnose 55 CC Constellation with TRIPLES no less, going to pull a grounded soviet sub off the dirt. Or maybe it was MY sub LOL.
"The enemy below" with Robert Mitchum was a great flick too...
" Father Goose" with Cary Grant also...
" They were expendable" with Da Duke
These are pale in comparison to Spike Lees box office smash " I'm gonna get you sucka" ws

Hemingway's "Islands in the Stream" was made into a movie in the 60's (I think). It was a good book and a pretty good movie as Goerge C. Scott starred in it. There are plenty of shots of old wooden sport fishers and one scene where sharks are being held at bay with a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle). Cool boats and fishing with automatic rifles rates pretty high with me. The only thing missing from the movie was a scene with gratuitus female nudity. In the end I give it a thumbs up.

==================
You beat me to the "The Russians are Coming" ref and the 55 CC, likely about a 1955 model. I didn't think anyone else would notice. I put that on VCR replay so I could hear those old Chris-Craft (Hercules) engines, probably the 400ci "W" model engine, start up and in a later scene come at speed, slow down, then pull of at speed, while being fired at.

I have only seen a three of those old triple engine hulls, one on the hard in rough shape, another I went aboard, and aother is owned by my wife's cousin. He refinished his, which sits in a barn, but due to a family tragedy, she will probably not go back into the water.

Not sure of the best boat movies, LOL. But I have worked on two boats that have been used in the movies :D

Actually, the movie boat was for sale, probably 15-20 years ago by now--I saw it in HEMMINGS MOTOR NEWS ! I was under the impression that they were the marinized 331 chisselers ( hemis ). The sound effects were good; I remember one scene with a rusky looking over his shoulder at the helm, and just as a natural yachtsman would do, jockey throttles and clutches up to the dock like a pro--***** < 5 stars ws

Well I'm glad to see somebody came up with something interesting to talk about while I was in time out. I did check in on you guys as a guest to keep up, and I'm glad this thread wasn't deemed to be off-topic.

I have to agree with the previous notations of "Captain Ron" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" as they were two of my favorite boat movies as well.

Let's not forget ole' double naught seven in "Live and Let Die". That movie had some real cool speedboat chase scenes even though most of them did blow up when they hit dry land and such. Granted, Glastron/Carlson didn't make any major waves in the boating industry after the 70's with the exception of Renato Molinari racing Carlson tunnels as I recall, but that was a cool movie in the day.

The bottom of the list has to be "Speed 2: Cruise Control". If you need a serious laugh at a hollywood interpretation of a good boat movie, rent that one. If you thought jumping a Greyhound bus on the first movie was dumb, check out how the good guy was able to stop a cruise ship by jumping overboard with a length of nylon rope which he wrapped around the prop! Now that's reality in hollywood!

"The Master and The Commander".

One of my personal favorites.....

I missed that one. Guess I mistook it for a chick flick instead of a real boat movie and never paid attention to it or heard anyone else comment on it.

You don't strike me as a chick flick kind of guy, so maybe I'll check it out. BTW, thanks for everything you did, and everything you didn't!

It's a tall-ship movie - IMHO, one of the best of the genre.

From when men were men and ships had sails.

"From when men were men and ships had sails"? And the sheep were scared? :D Sorry, don't expect miracles from a guy, who like O. J., had nothing in his cell other than a stainless steel entertainment center!

Look out Pooh Bear, I may head out from MS to Pensacola in the morning! You skeered?

Dang, looks like I have found the secret to keeping the mods quiet! All I have to do is threaten to come see them in person.

You can come out now Karl. Mamma said it might be easier traffic-wize to go home in the morning. I have a tendency for road rage so it might be a good idea.

I have found some worthy members in your area, and I WILL be in a bar near you real soon! Then you can buy me that beer we talked about. Afterwards we can go out in the parking lot and beat the crap out of each other if yee won't to! I think you'll find me to be socially acceptable. Pascal did, but he still apparently doesn't like me in the cyber-bar.

Hey Pascal, I'll be in Miami for the boat show in February. You up for another face to face followed by a possible boot to butt? If so, I get to be the boot. You already have the "butt" title secured!!! :D

Hey, me and Pascal have met in person, and I know he can take a joke in real life. Otherwise, I wouldn't have said that. Additionally, this thread ain't exactly a serious attempt at world peace, and me and ole' JelloBoy (the author of this thread) are face to face buds both in the real world and in the cyber-bar so I know he won't mind this little digression.

Okay Brittney, me and you, all together now......zap me baby one more time!

Anybody ever see "The Lucky Lady"? great boat flick!! Burt Reynolds, Gene Hackman, Liza Minnelli, and Robby Benson. Lots of Booze, Boats, and gunfire set in the forties and based on booze runners. Some great boat chases with old wood cruisers running hard and smashing into each other. One my all time favs.

Never heard of that one. Seems to have all the ingredients for a good flick though.

Good thing ole' Burt didn't invite Ned Beaty along for that movie. We all know how things turned out last time Burt was in a boat movie with Ned. That was one scene I could live without ever seeing (or hearing......weee, weee) again.

Glad that one was filmed in Arkinsaw where things like that are acceptable in the land of Clinton.

"Oh way down south in the land of Clinton, mobile homes were made for rentin'. look away, look away, look away....Bill's the man!"
