What is best adhesive to use for re-veneering the salon paneling? Is Weldwood Original contact cement OK?

Thanks

thats the good stuff, but make sure you have good ventilation. bigbill

I'd go with the recommendation of the manufacturer...as you likely know you only get one chance with "contact" cement: once the veneer touches that's the spot it STAYS!!!! always have an extra set of reliable hands to aid in initial placement.

There are better people than me, like Paul, to tell you this but the way we do it is to make sure the veneer fits PERFECTLY. Then we cover say the bottom half with a plastic sheet. Than we apply the contact cement on the top half to both the veneer and the wood you are sticking to following the glue directions. Then holding the top off, we index the sheet on the plastic so it lines up perfectly. Then we stick the top and pull the plastic sheet off and apply contact cement to the bottom. If you are worried about getting cement in the narrow area, we use 3M spray contact cement to make sure we have complete coverage...that in itself is a great product.

I like the Weldwood Original. Do not use the water based stuff. Even the good stuff may take two coats on the veneer as it soaks into the paper backing on the first coat. Follow the directions and let it dry before attaching. I like to use a J-roller like the kind they use for Formica to roll the veneer on tight after it's up.

We had a lot of problems with the Weldwood. It was too sensitvie to the heat. We had to apply veneer to the inside wall of the aft bulkhead in our boat. the problem is that in our slip, that bulkhead faces teh sun most of the day and it was heating up and causing the veneer to bubble.

We used the Water based contact cement following this procedure and it solved our issue:

Apply 2 coats of the Water based contact cement to both the veneer and the surface you are applying it too. After the first coat drys, apply the next coat. Once this second coat drys for about 20 to 30 minutes, apply the veneer in the technique you choose. We then rolled out the veneer with a roller. Following this, we used an iron on low/medium heat covered witha lint free clean rag and ironed the entire veneer. about 2 weeks later got 3 to 4 bubbles in the veneer, we re ironed the entire thing and have not had any bubbles since.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for all the helpful information. The veneer I purchased has a thin fabric backing that is desigend to prohibit leaching of the adhesive. Hopefully that will help. At $200 a sheet waste is not an option.
