  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' LRC (1975 - 1981)
My yard was replacing my Rolls house bank today and while bringing the old batteries out, had one rupture and spill acid all over the staircase leading up to the pilothouse. They neutralized the acid, but it ruined the carpet.

I'm guessing they should replace the carpet, but would like your thoughts.

I haven't talked with them yet, only received a voicemail after hours.

Thanks.

I would think they should be responsible if there were signs that the batteries were leaky or if it were the new ones that leaked. If they took reasonable precautions and it just happened it's hard to assign blame but was there a way to protect the carpet? On the stairs its not easy in my experience.

see what they come up with and you will know what type of company you are dealing with.

That's probably your best bet.

It's possible those tired old unit would have ruptured no matter who was handling them. Even with reasonable care, sometimes s**t happens.

2 years ago I replaced windows. The yard has a 3 year warranty. The windows leaked and ruined wool carpet. The yard replaced windows, installed teak drip tray ( and nonskid ,and paint~$9k) covered new carpet. Should not be a concern for them to do the right thing. That's why you paid them.

The yard has a top notch on all my projects. I don't anticipate any issues, but we'll see what happens. This is small potatoes compared to what I've spent with them over that last year and I'm sure that comes into play as well. Plus its annual renewal time at their Marina......

It is quite simple was your carpet damaged prior to the yard removing the battery?

Jeff, where did you end up getting your new batteries? And if you don't mind saying, which ones did you get at what price?

DC Battery in Miami
Qty: 12
Model: 8HHG25
Manufacture: Rolls
Price: $523.50 each delivered

Contact: Albert
Email's: sales@dcbattery.com

Best price I could find, by far in some instances. Tell him I referred you.

Thanks, i know those guys. Made up a bunch of 4/0 cables for me when I re-did my inverter set up one winter when we were down there.

I was pretty pleased with their service and communication. They ran into an issue and only had 8 batteries in-stock (and Rolls had them on back-order), which meant the remaining 4 took about 4 additional weeks to arrive. That said, I was kept in the loop most of the time....

I won't hesitate to buy from them again. How was the quality of your cables? Model/Price?

Quality was fine; I supplied most of the cable, they did the cutting and crimping. It is definitely a low cost operation, location and facility wise. Like Battery Specialists, another good supplier down there, a lot of their biz is export to the Caribbean. Miami, Ft. L has an abundance of other good battery sources, I'd love to have just one of them here in North Carolina.

George, I bought 8 new Rolls batteries this year from RAE Battery in the northeast. I paid $425 each plus trucking to Michigan of $150. They were good to deal with and did almost everything they could when 2 of the new batteries proved defective within 2 weeks. They replaced them and shipped them to me, no questions at all. Yes, I did have to pay another marina $180 to install the 2 replacement batteries.

I am surprised a Rolls battery ruptured. I've never heard of that. I think the yard ought to compensate you, though. They were in charge when it happened.

Jim I would agree if they were bought from the yard ( the new ones that is) but if they were only providing the labor there can be a question of who is responsible.

Bear: which model of Rolls? My house/port bank is on the way out and at a price like that or even what OBX Tucker paid it would be worth the upgrade. Last time I looked Miller marine in MD had best prices, and it is boat show time up there.

George,
I bought my Rolls from Rae a few years ago. They came with new connecting cables and stainless bolts. I had not expected to get the cables and bolts. Give them a call.

I also couldn't believe that they shipped the batts and then billed later. I wouldn't be that trusting.

Miller was the 2nd cheapest I found. They were $40 more each ($480 total). My yard couldn't touch the price I paid and they are now buying from DC Battery (I think). Yard price (with my "best customer" discount) was still $150 more each.

Still haven't spoken with the yard about the carpet. The day got away from me at work. I aged with Jim that the battery should not have ruptured. They were only 8 years old and appeared to be in perfect physical condition (no corrosion and stored under the twin berth). Be that as it may, it happened.

Bear, what model Rolls do you have? That's a GREAT price is they're 8HHG25's!

You guys caught me with my receipts at the boat - 2 hrs drive away! Yes, that was the model of Rolls batteries I'm pretty sure. Yes, I also thought it was a good price and they came with new cables and bolts as Sky commented.

I ve never seen a batt rupture unless it exploded. Maybe they tilted it and leaked acid out the caps. I buy batts for my aircraft from Ca. get them shipped UPS They ship dry and the acid is in seperate containers in the same box. UPS delivered one to my office that was damaged in shipment. The bottom of the box was soaked with acid the guy dripped acid all thru the office, and left the batt in my office where it melted the carpet. UPS replaced all the carpeting in our offices and paid for temp offices while the work was being done.
