  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
A call to my fellow 8v71TA users. I have a 1975 58’YF, and when I got it,it had (2) banks consisting of : (2) 12v plus (1) 8v. While working on the engines, we experienced some issues with only one bank producing. If you remember from a previous post I asked if people had battery dials in their ER’s with #1, #2, or Both options to turn dial to. Wondering if this is an issue as well. My mechanic is informing that previous owner who installed this battery set up, did not use correct size wire connections and is suggesting I go back to a (4) 8v bank times 2, and make the correct size wire connectors. I’ve read the forums on batteries, and it’s a bit confusing all the answers out there. Big investment, don’t want to make the wrong decision.

Proper wire size is 4/0 including the jumpers between batteries. You should not combine batteries that are not of equal size. Four 8v batteries were the OEM setup and you should stick with that.

You absolutely need to replace your battery with 8V. Miss match leads to heat and over charging. You can pick between golf cart battery (Smaller and cheaper) and Rolls (expensive and bigggggg).

Amazing how people have cheaped out on these boats. 2-12’s and an 8’? That’s crazy. I went with US Battery when I replaced my 819- 8v batts were 1000 more than better Trojan GC batts. Worth the $1000 IMHO

BTW you have 8/71TI’s there was never an aftercoolered 8/71 that I know of.

12/12/8 is not a good setup… before repower I used 8v Golf Cart batteries and they fired the Naturals fine. I believe the Ns have high compression so there will be no issue with the TIs

All wiring including the jumpers should be 4/0

Rare in a boat but they are out there.
I have the DDC cut sheet if anybody wants it. To large to post in this thread.
