There has been a real ugly issue up here in NY on the Erie Barge Canal. It seems lock 12 has been damaged for most of the season on account of some big cruiser sinking in the lock. I don't know the details but it seems a giant crane has been lifting boats over the lock to try and move traffic along. I was also told that the generating plant flooded, many of the barge canal locks have their own electric power generating plants, (24 cycle) so with the electric plant damaged, the dam flooded, and a big cruiser sunk in the lock it may be best to avoid the canal. Not easy if you plan on heading south for the winter.

Planning a trip from long island ny to sandusky ohio in late august.any info on condition of erie canal? i know they had flood damage,but web site said they are open?

I understand that it's actually lock 10 and it's supposed to be open again around 9/1/06. They're doing maintenance on other locks while the canal's down.
