  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1978 - 1983)
I am planning a trip south in two stages. The last time, I stayed outside to Norfolk and interrupted the journey by storing the boat at Great Falls. However, I then had to fly from Norfolk to Baltimore to catch a flight to Toronto.

This time, I thought I'd go up the Delaware Bay to the C&D Canal to the Chesapeake and break up the trip at or near Baltimore. I'd leave the boat there from the beginning of September until mid-October then continue to Lauderdale.

My question is.....where would be best (economical; safe; convenient to get to airport) to go? I will want/need to haul the boat to change the anodes to zinc so I thought rack or outside storage might be best. The boat is a 35 ft. Tiara.

Any suggestions/recommendations appreciated.

I liked Anchor Bay East in Dundalk. We had a bunch of work done there, as did the PO. They are set up for in water as well as on-the-hill storage. It is about 20 minutes to BWI, I had a few occasions to fly out of there or pick up or drop off guests there.

Another alternative is Annapolis, which is about a half hour from the airport. Never used a marina there so have to defer to others for specific rec on that.

Check out the marinas on and near the Middle River. They would be about 45 minutes to the airport and perhaps cheaper than Anchor Bay. Friends have used Edwards Boat Yard a couple of years back for a similar purpose.

About the same distance to the airport from Annapolis, but an easier drive from here than MR. The only rack storage yard I know of in Annapolis is Bert Jabin's Yacht Yard, which is very well organized and well kept up. They have a large rack system and I see them putting boats in and out all the time. I don't know if they have indoor rack storage, though.

There's a few marinas on/near the Bohemia river near Chesapeake city...right along the C&D. Prices are probably better there than Annapolis, etc. I only know of them because I looked at a boat there.

That would definitely be cheaper than Annapolis, up there. I don't what kind of rack storage they have, but it's worth looking into.

Sorry, Jim, but where is "here"? And where is MR? I'm guessing that you're referencing the "Middle River" suggestion of BobK.

To all---the input provided is very much appreciated

And while I'm at it----is it a one-day or two-day "jaunt" from the C&D to Norfolk at 26 kts. and assuming a "reasonable" cruising day?

Sorry- "here' is Annapolis. We are about 25-30 from BWI airport, but it is an easier drive from Annapolis to the airport than it is from Middle River, because to get to BWI from MR you have to either go through one of the Baltimore tunnels or around on the Baltimore beltway. It's not as bad as D.C. traffic, but it still gets quite congested at times- lots of times.

I think at 26 knots it is two days to Norfolk, from the C&D canal. I think Annapolis to Norfolk is about 175 nautical miles; that's a days' running right there. The C&D is all six knots, so you'll take some time getting through it. You would have to be moving REALLY fast and have excellent weather to make Norfolk in one day from the eastern end of the canal, I would think.
