  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
Or as Hatteras' spec sheet referred to it, "Bait and Tackle Box"... $450.00

I have no idea if this one is factory or was added later. So I was wondering if anybody had an original or pictures of one.

It needs quite a bit of work, but for now I'm refinishing the doors and trying to decide if they should be varnished or painted. I'm also hoping somebody can show me what the interior of the original one looked like. I'd eventually like to revamp the drawers to make them a: actually slide, and b: better at holding and organizing tackle. I was thinking maybe set them up for some kind of interchangeable drawer or box system.

Here's a "before" picture of what I have now:

Looks familiar, or homemade?

Very different from the one on my '79 43C. Mine came with a bait freezer on left side, deep sink in middle, and shallow sink in right side. 4 drawer tackle center under right shallow sink, with door.

I just converted mine to an insulated fish box over the winter. I cut out the freezer and middle deep sink, framed the inside, insulated with an r5 foil lined foam, and finished interior with FRP. While in there, I tapped into the fresh water supply line to the sink, and added a fresh water washdown hose bib on the base of the unit. It's big enough to hold about 9 - 10 good sized tuna.

Thanks for the input Bob. Your work sounds impressive. I'd love to see it.

Keep in mind though that this is on a 36 ft boat. To fit all that stuff it would have to cover the salon door.

I found a picture in a magazine article that shows a tackle center in a 36C, but I have no idea if it's factory or not either:

Not sure if they'd look similar 9 years down the road, but does that one look anything like yours?

My educated guess is that mine was added later because it seems to be glass over wood, and I tend to think that Hatteras would have made it from fiberglass.

Mine was originally made of fiberglass over plywood with minimal framing in the corners. It appears to be original Hatt, as the construction is similar to the bench seat up in the flybridge. If I remember to bring my camera to the boat this weekend I'll take a couple pics of it.

So my hopes of ending up with some nice varnished mahogany doors were dashed when I stripped one down. They're plywood (looks like mahogany plywood) with a veneer.

Thus I elected to paint for now and when the tackle station makes it's way to the top of the list I'll see about making new doors. For now, they're low mainenance:

Still keeping an eye out for an original one or others for ideas for when the day comes. So if anybody has any info please feel free to share.

Years ago you could by a gloss Formica that was a match for the hatteras off white. The stations I've seen we're plywood covered with Formica with teak trim

I think mine is original (1977 36C) except for top which I replaced with starboard. It is plywood covered with slightly textured (not high gloss) Hatteras white formica. 38"H x 33"W x 22D - looks to be deeper than yours. The door/drawers are on the 22" left side (when viewed from cockpit/stern) facing the cabin door and it has a teak trim strip above the top of the door. 5 drawers about 5" tall and 18" wide. Top 2 short depth drawers where sink is and 3 full (about 24" deep) drawers below sink level. The far right 10" of the interior is used to run water service to and drain line from sink and also has fresh water service outlet on right bottom of side opposite door. All 4 corners where the sides meet are covered with teak outside corner molding as are all the edges around the top. Small (about 13" x 16") stainless sink in right side of top with sprayer nozzel like on a kitchen sink. This leaves about a 12" x 22" work surface on the door side of the top. Sits about a foot from starboard side near ships service and that space was set up for stowing power cords/water hose. Is 3" from cabin wall - enough room for landing net/gaff stowage. On the latter series one 36C's the ladder to the flybridge was moved to the right side, and sits in front of the tackle locker so the door/drawers could not go on the side facing stern. If your ladder is port side, your's may be orignal too - just a different design.

When you are done, consider making a Sunbrella cover for the top and first few inches of the sides - it will keep it looking good. Sew elastic into the bottom seam on the back side and it will be easy to take on/off.

Good luck, Bob K

Interesting ideas and info. This is all going to be very helpful when I finally, pardon the pun, tackle the project.

Thanks all.

I finally tested my new fish box (former tackle center) last week on a 3 day offshore trip. I filled it 1/3 with ice and put 5 flats of bait into it for the second night. It kept the bait frozen solid for over 24 hours. We fished Wed thru Fri, and on Sat morning cleaning up back at the dock, I still had over half the ice I started with still in the box.

Here's a couple shots of the inside. I still need to secure the water line and drain line. I teed off the fresh water supply line to the sink and added a hose bib down low on the right side of the box, under the stbd gunwale.

Very interesting. And very different from my setup.

Insulation must be good. It looks like it snowed in there a couple of days ago.

Thanks for the pictures.
