  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
I need to move my boat (75’ SDMY) from Spanish Wells, Bahamas to Norfolk in the beginning of July.
Typically, my wife and I would do the trip via leisurely hopping up the east coast. This year, I’m contemplating
Leaving wife ashore, getting some buds together plus hiring a mate in order to chug 24/7 with the
intent of utilizing the stream.

So far, plan on stopping once in Fernandina beach for a rest day and fuel; other than that, nonstop chug.
If the “overnightness” becomes too burdensome, can always bail and duck inside every evening. Will go via Freeport
In order to not close-out plan B options.

Opinions?

Anyone up for a bogus adventure?

How early in July? Would it do any good for you if one (me) joined you in Fernandina?

I'm sure the wife would not mind if I dropped everthing (extensive RV trip planned) and took off on a boat LOL. Have a safe trip!

I have the same boat. I would leave SW full of fuel and head straight to Norfolk. It is 750NM, making 10K in the stream you should be getting at least 1NM/G. Going into Fernandina costs alot, you miss "cutting the corner" going north and get yourself out of the stream. Pick a good weather window with south winds for at least three days. Three guys ,4 hours per shift is two overnights. We used a company that plots courses for sailors , they can give you waypoints taking into consideration the GS and your destination, this keeps you in the fastest moving part of the GS............Pat

Make sure your radar and AIS is operational. We do a lot of night fishing for swordfish off the Florida coast. Tons of shipping. At least once every trip we have some kamikaze freighter try to run us over. Red Bull and coffee don’t fall asleep at the helm.

Im just finishing a fort Peirce to Toronto run in a week, let me give it some thought. When do you want to do the trip.

Walt: For insurance reasons, Boat needs to be north of Beaufort NC by mid July. Tentatively planning a July 3 or 4
Departure in order to build in a bit of buffer.

this is who I used https://jcgulfstream.com/pricing . Falling asleep at the wheel is not an issue. With three guys you are on for 4 hours and off 8 hours before you have to navigate again.....Pat

I hope to be done on this one by Tuesday June 11. That gives me some time before I leave again if you need the help. Send a PM and I'll email to discuss if you wish.

Yeah that doesn’t really work. Coming off shift takes minimum 2 hours to wind down eat crap and be able to actually go into the sleep mode then another hour is lost in the wake up phase that puts you down to 5 hours at best. Everyone is different my dad could fall asleep standing up, me I lay in bed for hours counting sheep looking at the clock. And then there’s crew incapacitation. I did a transatlantic back in the 80’s in a Hinkley SW50 with 3 friends that were veteran sailors. Mid Atlantic we got hit with a wicked storm. I was the only one on the boat that wasn’t sick. 36 hours I spent at the wheel surfing down the face of waves I had only seen before in books. You never know when you go down a crew member or 2 plus at night you should really have 2 people on watch. And I suspect most of you guys are not in your 20’s anymore. Need to compensate for that.
