  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
42' LRC - Mark II (1980 - 1985)
Hi Folks,

We are planning for the Bahams for a few mont this winter and looking to put together a good list of spares for our 1985 LRC 42.
Any input here would be welcome!

Cheers

Impellers, belts, filters, oil incl enough for whatever generator oil change will be needed, filters.

For the gens i carry a complete raw water pump, coolant circulation pump, full set of sensors, voltage regulator

Spare air con pump, spare watermaker feed pump. Hand held TDS meter in case the one in the WM fails and I need to manually send product to tank

Extra breakers, connectors, wire etc.

A couple of 357’s

I would add a spare macerator pump as pump out facilities are few and far between in the Bahamas. A fuel line and primer bulb for the dinghy’s outboard. Fuel filters for the dinghy. I have Raritan Elegance heads so I have spare macerator for them as well (different then the macerator for the pumping of the holding tank). I think Pascal mentioned a spare AC pump. I carry a collection of SS hose clamps from big to little. And of course all fuel filters, etc.

I also always have an automatic 120v rule bilge pump on board, I think it s 2000gph, with about 15’ of hose. Very useful to dewater a compartment, or if a DC rule pump fails or for the tender

A macerator is good to have especially if you have a jabsco style pump. The Sealand pumps are pretty bullet proof

Thanks Pascal, very good list and greatly appreciate the input here. Cooland circulation pump was not on my list

Thanks for the list. Macerator pump was not on my list either, but it is now. Good call!

And if you have hydraulics, whether Davit, stab etc, a pail of fluid plus some fittings and caps. Back in March I popped a leak on a stab cylinder an hour from Nassau. Dumped all the fluid in the bilge with a 6 week trip ahead. I had fluid but no caps. I was able to get someone to bring me a few so I was able to cap the lines to the bad cyl. And run the Trac stabs on one fin which is better than nothing until I was able to get a new cyl shipped.

Live and learn. 10 years from now I ll have 2000 lbs of spares on board. :) but when you have a spare on board, that part usually doesn’t fail :)

Oh I did I mention a spare main starter? Yep... I carry one.

Funny thing is that the previous captain of the 110 I just took over was even more nuts than me. I found a set of new MTU engine controls, spare Trac stab screen, and an ER blower control panel :)

One item missing from the list is a spare raw water check valve for the generator. I lost prime in Chub and replacing the impeller did not fix. Without a working check valve, feed water was just draining back thru the seasick.

I ve never used a check valve on a generator and I don’t see how it would be needed. Gen raw water pump are self priming and unless you have an air leak water should not drain back.

A check valve on genset is a bandaid covering up another problem.

Btw there are system specific parts you should carry

Vacuflush: a set of duckbills and if over 10 year old a bellow kit for the pump
Headhunter heads: a couple of check valves
GalleyMaid heads and Fresh water pump: stators

And obviously have a back up DC or AC water pump even if you already have both a DC and AC pump installed

It was for my 5kw genny that has about 4' of head. The little impeller just didn't have the pull to draw raw water up that high. For what it's worth, I also have a check valve on my AC, watermaker and stabilizer line.

I guess if your AC and WM pumps are installed above WL you may need the check valves but these pumps should be installed below WL. Stabs are usually cooled from engine raw water. For zero speed, the electric cooling pump should also be located below WL.

Assorted clamps, screws, bolts etc.. Look over all of the float switches and make sure they are clean and free. Maybe bring a spare.
Bring a set of bungs along, tools for all of the above parts mentioned by others. If you have dripless shaft seals, make sure spares are mounted on the shafts, or that you have extra packing for the shafts and rudders. If you have a water maker make sure you have spare seals and plenty of pre filters.
A tube of 5200 and or other exterior grade caulk could come in handy. Make sure the propane tank is full, as well as the freezer. We had a small standalone freezer that served us really well. Load it up with proteins and veggies.
Distilled water. It may be readily available but it depends on where you will be and how long. Batteries will need service. I brang a gallon along.
The S.O. is a maniac in the galley had made sure we had all sorts of sundries, spices etc..
