I'm thinking of redoing the nonskid with Awlgrip or Imron. Anybody know the paint code that corresponds to the 1990 Hatteras off -white? That's the short question; here's the longer explanation…

Several years ago I had the nonskid redone. The painter did not like using the two part paints and he showed me several examples of his non-skid work using interlux bright side. Looked very nice to me so, since I really didn't want to do it myself, I had him do it. Looked great and I was very pleased.

BUT..the durability is poor. The good side is that it's easy to touch up - I redid the flybridge deck last season. The bad part is, the Imron that was on their previously needed no touch up for 15+ years. The other bad point about the interlux is that if you spill certain liquids on it, it can discolor where nothing bothered the Imron.

So, I'm thinking I may just re-do it myself with two-part but I need the nonskid to be a reasonable match to the Imron color that is on the boat. It is NOT the original Imron listed in the hatt paperwork since the boat was resprayed in 1992 with the "newer" color that was in use at that time. So I need the Awlgrip or Imron code that would match that 1990 off white.

I have a lot of experience spraying Imron but none with Awlgrip and I have never rolled either one which is what I would be doing.

Mike, you can get an AwlGrip color chart which has actual paint samples on it from the makers, I think they are Azko Nobel.

You would have to sand the Interlux off, but it sounds like it might come off fairly easily. Then prime with 545 Awlgrip primer, and then roll AwlGrip and GripTex mixed together onto the areas you are refinishing.

There is also a flattening additive that AG make that takes out some of the gloss and makes the deck grippier. However it seems to make the paint age faster and it does collect more dirt. I did not use it when I did my decks a couple of years ago. They seem grippy enough to me. Your boat is under cover so you might choose to do it.

I think Oyster White is a pretty good match for the 1990 Hatteras color, but I can't swear to it. Jamestown or Fawcetts ought to be able to get you the AwlGrip color chart.

AG is easy to roll on, if I can do it, anyone can.

Mike, Let me offer another suggestion on technique.

I have had the premixed non-skid in AG and didn't like it. Not uniform enough for my taste. The better job, and I've used this twice is to roll on a coat of AG with those 6" hot dog rollers and before it tacks have someone working behind you lightly spray 'shark skin' powder over it as uniformly as possible. This is done with a standard spray gun putting the powder in the cup. It takes very little. When it is dry enough to walk back over it for recoating, use a leaf blower to remove all non-adhered powder, then roll on a coat of AG gloss. Don't add flattening agent. This method almost eliminates glare, but cleans much easier. The grip is fantastic barefoot or with shoes, soapy or dry.

I posted some pictures of my job a year or two ago in one of Vincentec's threads.

Agree, you need to sand off the Brightside. I did not use primer. I never had good results rolling AG primer because it never leveled out good. And I never lost bond between properly prepared old and new AG when not using it.

3M Fine Line tape makes a nice edge.
