Hatteras Model
74' COCKPIT MY (1995 - 1999)
At the beginning of each new season, I buy two new personal burgers and two YC burgers. After all these years, I still have trouble keeping these burgers attached to my boats. On one, the 43 opened, I have run a taught wire vertically on the hardtop deck. I need to attach two burgers to this taught wire. One the other boat, I have two small eye bolts( not really but don't know what the half moon things I have are called) but the concept is the same. On these, I run some shock cord vertically with loops to go through the burgee grommets. On each setup, they tend to break. I have tried parachute cord, wire leader, spring loaded halyard clips, zip ties and nothing seems to hold. On the wire setup, I need to keep them on the wire and stop them from moving up and down. On the shock cord, same thing. I am down to thinking I may need some sort of shackle but there has to be a better way. Any and all ideas are appreciated. Oh, by the way, since these are lit, I do not need to worry about hoisting them up and down. Thanks.

I use two different items both of which you state didn't work. The zip tie has worked for me around 18 years. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck.

At the risk of upsetting some of the members here, and with no disrespect intended...Ill say I have no need to attach my burgers to the boat, I usually have them eaten on the ride back from McDonalds If not I stow them in the Galley

McDonald's will get you banned from the site. Last warning. No more bad burgers.

One of the mooderators, who lives in Annapolis, regularly eats at McDonald's, I am sorry to report. It seem to be an incurable habit.

I attach my YC burgee to the bow staff with small zip ties that pass thru the holes on the staff and thru the eyes on the burgee. They mostly last one season, but I do furl and cover the burgee when I'm not aboard.

I fly my private signal from a stainless steel "pig stick" at the top of the mast. The stick has an eye at the top. I run a 1/8" nylon line thru the eye to 2 small snap shackles that clip on the flag. I run that line to a small cleat on the mast that keeps the line taught and keeps the stick in the holders. The attached pic may have enough detail to show this.

Eating there should void his health insurance.

Pick your poison...It is a habit much like heroin or good Kentucky Bourbon

when I lived in Annapolis the McDonalds at Cape St Clare Rd and Route 50 (just west of the Bay Bridge) was said to be the busiest in the nation. especially on a Friday night in the summer, with all the DC and Baltimore folks making their way to Ocean City. My daughter called that corner, "Junk Food Junction" and we were regulars there. Now she blames it for the cancer she just pushed back with a years worth of chemo and radiation

I'm not the healthiest eater but if I'm going to eat fat and cholesterol it's going to be worth it.

Lots of laughs. Of course, I meant burgees.

In addition to the always practical zip tie, you can find spring loaded hooks at west marine that clip on cables or lines. There are also flag clips (I think they are called captain's clips) which are basically a figure 8 wire with one side of the 8 round and the other oval with an overlapping opening. You can tie the round part to just about anything incl a small eye screw on a teak staff or just a thin line running up and down.

All of my flagstaffs have 1/8" line on them. I tie each loose end to the burgee and then tie the loop end to the cleat on the flagstaff. They can't go anywhere that way, but apparently your setup is different.

For burgers, I like Five Guys. Order it with the works.

I use Sky's setup on my aft flag staff which is 60 inches.

On my club burgee on the 36 in staff at the pulpit i use skipper clips:

As for my burger, i too like the 5 guys from back when they were a small DC joint... But Peter Lugers has them beat in Brooklyn. Fresh baked bun and those big honking slices of German bacon mmmmm.

Now THAT is properly nautical. I am seriously impressed.

Sky - that is exactly what my YC looks like on my bow staff. My problem is when I do not have a staff and need to attach it either to a fixed wire or just stringing it between two cleats. BTW, how long does that line on your burgee hold up?

Do-Bro flag clips work well on a wire strung between two pad eyes. Be careful not to let them touch a painted / varnished flag pole. They will mar the surface. They are sold everywhere.

I use Sky's method for the burgee and US Flag. Though I dont think my knots are as fancy.

Tony - those are precisely the clips that I had tried to use but the actual vertical wire is just a bit too thick for the small clip to hug around. Also, even when I was able to do so, there is nothing to stop the burgees from moving vertically on the wire. However, with all of that said, I am glad that you reminded me of the name of the eye pads. As always, thanks for your help.

When in doubt my fail safe to "McGyver", I mean temporarily attach or fix anything is Fish Rigging Wire. It's like the temporary fix of all fixes. It's held everything from flags up, doors closed, refrigerators shut, throttle and clutch cables together with their prospective ball joints etc. Go with your normal setup and throw some rigging wire on there to sure it up. The copper wire blends right in and no one will know what you've done except you,,, I swear. Lol
