I have a mid 80's vintage 8kw Genset aboard my boat. The engine is a Yanmar 3 cyl, direct injection (no glow plugs) connected to an aging, rusty metal aqua lift type muffler. At commissioning this spring, an inspection of this muffler revealed some advanced evidence of corrosion that looks like a leak getting ready to happen. We measured the plumbing in place and it looks like 1 7/8" or 2" side inlet/top outlet configuration. The existing metal unit is round, about 12" in diameter and maybe 14" tall.
I took a look at the Centek/Vernalift website for a replacement. They offer both 1.88" inlet/outlet and 2" inlet/outlet so I perhaps need to pull the hoses to get a more accurate reading on what I have now. The curious thing is that in this size inlet, the units are offered in 9" diameter round and a 10.5" diameter round sizes.
My question is: Which size do I buy? Both are smaller than my existing. I'd like to go the smaller of the 2 if I can for space saving. On a previous gas powered boat I had an 8kw Westerbeke with a very small round muffler and it worked fine. Any thoughts?
