It's been listed for a couple of weeks. When I first saw it listed and after looking through the pictures I thought the price must be a misprint. It appears to be a nice boat.

My next house?

Not a bad idea.

That is a beautiful boat!

That boat has been a few slips away from me - on and off - for years.
The price reflects the (miserable) engines, 16V149's. The captain told me she burns 240/hr at ten knots.

I would bet that each of those engines weighs more than my entire boat does.

It's in beautiful shape. A good deal if you have a place to keep it.

That looks like a lot of boat for the money. It is located very near me, I might have to call one of my broker friends and take a look. I will report back about what I see.

Going to move up John?
If ever there was a good candidate for a re-power that boat is it. An amazing boat with the WRONG engines.
I have seen mechanics going down the ER hatch a lot on that boat, then they run her and the mechanics are back. Over and over.

Not a chance Dave, just thought I’d look in case any one here on the site wanted a report, but I think you answered the question of why it is so cheap. John

I wonder what a pair of 16v149s sound like at WOT? Are they the largest version of the classic DD 2-stroke engine made?

I heard they made a 20v 149. Probably for trains or something huge like that. Too much fuel at 10 it's for me . I'm out.

I wonder what each engine does weigh. The boat must be 150-200K pounds, I would think.

10-12k lbs is my guess.

That's a lot of engine. I bet the props and shafts are massive too.

At 1000 RPM, she she might be producing 850hp or so which should be 45-55 gallons per engine.

I would want to top her off and take her for a cruise to verify the fuel burn at 1000 rpm. Should be far less than 240 gph. Might be only 8 or 9 knots though.

Now, overhauling those engines? Nightmare. They weigh 10,860 lbs each.

She is spacious inside.

Nice looking boat, and a lot of it for the money.

Please don't take offense in any way but there is No Way that boat burns 240 GPH at 10 Knots. The only way that happens is if there is something wrong with the boats running gear and or those motors. They would have to be run at nearly full throttle to burn that much fuel.

That would mean the boat at displacement speed is only achieving .041 Miles per gallon. That's less then 1/2 of a 10th of a mile per gallon. A New 92 Viking at Full Throttle doing 35 Knots probably gets .2 miles per gallon and this captain telling you this Hatteras gets .041 MPG at 10 knots is full of it.

If that's true what he's telling people then he needs to be fired for not realizing something is wrong with the boat. OR he needs to be fired for misrepresenting his owners boat to possible buyers.

Tony

How about making a big LRC out of her? Just a thought, but could these be reconfigured to naturally aspirated? If so, then you'd probably have near bullet-proof engines and you'd likely never want to run on plane anyway. It would seem the cost to convert them would be less than the potential costs associated with fuel and repairs in the current configuration. But being DDEC, I don't know if that is even possible.

There could have been miscommunication (maybe he meant to say cruise). In any case I'm just repeating what the captain told me.
Seen in person the 82' sport fish is a giant bloated monster of a thing, a parody of the term "sport fish".
They are neither graceful nor fast, bulkier than most motoryachts the same length.
There was one in Shelter Island Boatyard for several years (more than five if I remember right) undergoing a stretch and complete gut and re-do. It came into the yard as a brand new boat!
She left as a masterpiece, about 100', all new ER with the biggest Mans available, all interior decks floated on isolation dampers, tricked out beyond belief, etc etc etc.
Last I heard she was cruising Alaska.

I know, don't shoot the messenger. That's why I mentioned please don't take offense. They are Huge Heavy boats for their length, I agree.

Nothing sleek about them, Great Yacht Fish, travelling boats for sure though.
