I need to get resurveyed to bump my insurance coverage from 50k to 100k after my repower. Anyone know someone who would take care of things for me? I know of none at this point so I'm starting from ground zero. Maybe someone on the forum here knows of a good insurance company and surveyor. Right now I have NMU but I'm always shopping.

Thanks,

Jack

I can recommend Bill Mullins at William Mullins Marine Surveying in Bensalem, PA. I used Bill to survey the 43 DC I bought in Ft. Myers last November. He did a very thorough job. You can reach him at 215-327-9219. Feel free to call me if you would like more information.

Very thorough and professional review on my 1985 45'. Don't kid yourself if you think that a re-power or any improvement is going to increase the market value of your boat. The comparables in today's market absolutely stink. You may want to discuss with your agent if you haven't done so already. look under George in the gallery forum to see the bazillions I've spent on mine. Repower, custom vents, tackle center, new hard top, new interior, new electronics, new safety systems including rafts, epirbs, extinguishers, and my insurable value still went down. He did say that the boat was above average condition for its year.
My agent advised me not to put any more in the boat for in a catastrophic loss, I'm loosing my ars.

I can share my survey for your pervue if you like to see what a nice job this guy does.

I don't really care about the market value point. I actually bought the boat way below market value five years ago. I just want the combined cost of the repower and the remaining portion of my loan to be covered as far as insurance is concerned. There is a difference between the market value of my boat with the 2400hr crusaders versus with brand new diesels but I don't care about that. In order to make the insurance change I need a current survey. My last survey was when I bought it with 2400hr gassers five or so years ago, which is why I have to get it resurveyed.

Jack before you pick your surveyor talk to your Insurance carrier. For example I have Boat US and since my boat is older and surveys at a higher rate then most they will except surveys only from certain surveyors! Just don't want to see you waste dollars for nothing.

Jackman,
sorry if I offended you. Your reply seems rather hard. Simply stated, the surveyor is going to rate your boat as "fair market value" in the statement of valuation page. The replacement cost will not be considered by your agency or underwriter. The surveyor will not give a rats ars what you paid for the boat, what you have in it, how nice you keep it. He does not care you have new engines. As an example on mine. replacement cost with all my improvements is 1.3 mill, the fair market is $307,000. the insurance company underwrote that by $57,000 after the appraisel. Buc research adjustments, condition of vessel and local knowlege of the appraiser all comes into play. If your appraiser is reputible, he will work all angles to consider the "risk" especially if its for insurance. you need to speak with your agent. I have a good one in PA who writes lots of jersey and Delaware policies.
Just my two cents from 30 years and 6 sportfishing boats new and old.

good luck.

3 Agencies I work with
MAE group in PA Mike Engleman aggressive pricing, good underwriters Zurich
Bay Agency in NJ Brian Desousa well established, seasoned boater
Christi Insurance in PA Eric McDowell. Handles most if not all new vikings

George,

I'm not offended at all. That's the shortcoming of communicating over the internet. You often cannot tell what emotions are being used with what's being written. When I said I didn't care in my earlier statement it had nothing to do with what you said. I just meant that my goal is to cover the balance of the loan as far as liability ect in regards to my credit union. I think I should be able to do that fairly easilly even though I know I won't be getting a value as high as I believe I should get for the boat considering the market drop.

No offence from my end.

Maybe things are different when you get out of the Great Lakes, but I have had the same carrier for 5 years. When I first went to insure the boat, I told my agent that I wanted an agreed hull value policy. He asked me how much. I gave him a figure and that is what it is insured for. The insured value has been the same for 5 years with no additional survey or market adjustments.

Well I think things went well with the insurance company. They okay'd my coverage increase. It will cost about $385 more per year but thats fine with me for doing what they did. They said that they understand my situation and still want me to get a post repower survey for proper documentation but they feel my request to increase the coverage to 93k is acceptable! Good news for once!

congrats. Who's you daddy? I mean insurance agent.
