  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
I'm going to apply propspeed this year for the first time ever. Wheels, rudders, struts, shafts. Have been using epoxy barrier coat and antifouling on struts and rudders and rustoleum zinc spray on wheels and shafts. Prop wash removes the anitfouling on a decent area of the rudders. By the end of season the zinc spray is like 36 grit and efficiency falls off a cliff. Zinc spray is very effective on growth though and remains adhered all year, so there's that. Any accolades or horror stories on propspeed? Do i believe the propspeed application calculator or is it wildly off to sell more product? Expiration date on products? Application nuances? I'm sort of thinking that each component, or groupings of components, should be done individually just due to the attention I believe is necessary applying the products. What do you guys say about this magic potion?

Do you use a scheduled dive service?

PropGlide, PropOne, PropSpeed and more; Other than for dock queens and some slow boats, I have never been impressed with this stuff, it still wears or falls off the running gear.

I'm still waiting on a whole boat bottom done with this goo.

The reviews seem to be all over the map; some folks love it and some seem to feel it doesn't work and doesn't stick. YMMV

scheduled, no. I have a electric brownie on board that I tried to do it but never was regular enough, hence resorting to the zinc spray. There's a couple hardcore tuna guys that use it, just acquaintances in the yard and I'll likely ask when I see them. It wears on their boats gear but I've never seen patches that literally fell off.

What part of the country are you located in?

I had a 46' Sportfish that was located in New England and used Propspeed with GREAT success. Lasted me 2-3 seasons with each application.

Most of the issues I've read about are DIY'ers that did not prep or apply the product correctly. I did my own and had others apply it and never had an issue with adherence.

I also applied it to my props on my 58LRC now located in Florida. Since i don't use the boat as frequently as I want to, the Propspeed is not working as well. I think my monthly dive service basically removes most of it over the course of a year.

Right in Boston harbor. The issue with application appears to be the main gripe on various forums, whether users know it or not. Drips and orange peel causing vibration issues seems to be a common complaint. I'll be applying myself so the details in the process can be readily addressed. Another mistake I read about is the false economy of trying to use all the contents of the can of silicone coating. That hot coating multiple times is what is producing the orange peel. Thanks for the input!

Dripping wet in the slings. The propspeed was quite effective . Ground plane naturally a mess. I’m divided on keeping the dynaplate

I have a bunch of friends who've used it. As I understand it, the stuff works well in colder climates, but in Florida it doesn't seem to do much. What region do you live in?

What would you replace the Dynaplate with or go without and only rely on your underwater metal (rudders, shafts, etc) to make earth ground in the water??

My experience with prop speed in Florida has not been good enough to justify the expense. We now use a
Petit product that is gray and it seems to hang in there better. Don’t know if silty/sandy water takes it off faster.

There seems to be no solid consensus on whether its better to have a defective high voltage circuit leak into the water and potentially kill a swimmer, or to not have the ground to earth when away from the dock and keep that voltage aboard tamed by a gfci controlled circuit. A real isolation transformer, as opposed to the two galvanic isolators present now, I believe would make the dynaplate superfluous. Its a bit to figure out for sure .

I use Petit Guardian, two part , but easier to apply than Propspeed .

The dynaplate is not for the electrical ground a d certainly doesn't add to the safety or danger of the boat.
