No but if anyone does know it's Bob Strang @ J&T. He has helped me several times with information:cool:

Just guessing here. This might be fun.

1. Made on the night shift
2. Its really an asterisk
3. Star of David, made by Jews.

who else can get close?

If only one engine has it, I am going to say it's (and you knew this was coming) the STARboard engine.

ooooch... that will leave a mark.

It means it was a good engine and got a star for that day. In engine pre-school.

I think it means that you're special.

It helps prevent adding digits to the serial number of stolen engines.

Okay, funny funny, great humor. I should have known, but thanks for playing along.

Here is my guess:

NOTHING

I noticed mine has the same star. Interesting.

Might have been a joke from Covington.

I called Detroit years ago to inquire about something and of course they wanted the serial number of the motor. I mentioned the star at the end and the lady said it meant nothing. Fwiw, both of my engines have a star and the serial numbers worked out to the port engine being born as a full marine engine and the starboard engine being born as an industrial engine and sometime later being converted. There is no indication of the starboard engine ever having been replaced.

If I had to guess, I would say it is a foundry designation. The Sterling foundry who made a lot of boat castings always had a "S" inside a frame. Same with fasteners. The "LE" bolts stood for Lake Erie
and TR was another which right now I can't remember.

I replaced my stbd engine with a brand new 8V92TA that was built for a jet start at the airport.
It was a high output engine rated for 585 HP and I had to convert it for marine and 650 HP TI

We went through the build sheet at FDDA. Everything on the build sheet said that everything in the new engine was the same as the old engine.

When I picked the new engine up, the data plate on the valve cover said " RET CAM" for retarded cam not the std cam I needed.
Which to believe? The build sheet or the sticker on the engine?

The factory said the build sheet is right. I still was not convinced. 5 hours later we got an engineer who said that he does not ever remember building a HO engine with Ret Cams. He said I will drive a mile to the other end of the building and try to enter my serial number into the computer and see if it will accept a build order. He doubted that it would take as the engine is no longer in production.

He called back and the computer has a notation saying "BIR" For build in retardation.
It did in fact have retarded cams since since it was a emmisions engine.

I had the pleasure of tearing the new engine apart and changing the cams.

It helps prevent adding digits to the serial number of stolen engines.

D, If your correct, and you likely are, it no longer maters, the market for a boosted 6-71 is dead. Not to mention the poor dumb crook willing to remove one in the hopes of making some coin.

Those tasks are only for the serious boat lover, and we been called other things.

Hope things are well on your end!

I just made that up. But my real guess is that it's a terminator for the serial number so you know when you've reached the end.

If somebody steals a DD today they're probably hustling to the scrap yard for a quick buck. How much is iron going for per ton?

We're hanging on here, thanks. Hope you're doing well.

I think it's like the Golden Ticket in Willy Wonka. Either that or it means we're all doomed!
