  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
This 8v71 project near us started as a tuneup to possibly correct excess smoke. Mechanic A ran the racks and adjusted valves but was unsuccessful with the smoke. Mechanic B was called in and has dug deeper. Owner and mechanics are in discussions.

This issue could've been 15 years old. The guy who owns the boat has not taken it higher than 5 miles an hour in all 15 years. He likes the idol. By the way it's not Hatteras.

Damage like that and only a little smokey?

That says volumes on how robust these old Detroits are.

It actually ran and idled smoothly after mechanic A was done with it, but smoked pretty bad. There were one or two more rods found bent.

This is the first time I have had a chance to post this information.
As all are aware i rebuilt the 892"s in my 52c to the tune of about 70.000 "just shy" that number. It was not a Palm Beach rebuild new heads.water pumps, turbos were all sent off and tested and repaired, pistons sleeves. crank is all that stayed. Western branch did the rebuild I used them rather than a man in a van. I wanted a good job and if anything went wrong the company is big enough to back up the warranty i requested in writing. Well there were problems with smoke from the sea trial on. After about 2 years of trial and error and test after test after test. It boiled down to injectors. The injectors were taken off and bench tested. Out of 16, 13 were not good they were not spraying or creating a fog. They were as the guys said peeing a stream. After replacing only the bad ones some of the new ones were bad and 2 of the old went bad. This procedure went on and own for 2 years. A total of 42 injectors were put in. I took all the injectors out and put them in a box and dumped them on the service managers desk. (by this time i was ill) I took a pick of them and sent it to the owners with a well worded note from my legal adviser. In the mean time i purchased new ones from Bosh. The engines run grate now. No smoke at all. I will add that getting the correct injectors was a task. I did not realize that there were many many injector numbers for the same engine.
WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS DD INJECTORS ARE CRAP................ This is based on first hand experience. If you have smoke or at least haze off in the distance you may want to bench test the injectors. It was suggested not to mix name brands, why i do not know.I do understand now this problems is nation wide. Western Branch being a DD dealer would not admit there was a problem. The young girl in the parts dept spilled the beans.

You mean the girl who used to work there?

He is getting new injectors, I'll call him today and find out which ones they've ordered. I'll tell them your story.

Had a problem with a Ford Power Stroke diesel (as did thousands) 10-15 years back. Ford decided to cut their losses and not help me at warranty's end. They were in full denial of systemic problems that everyone but them acknowledged. I had a Mercedes rep friend who got me a number from his friend to break through the Ford headquarter's automated phone system. Once in, I started dialing random extensions until I got someone who's voice I liked--a gal named Charlene. "Hello, Death Benefits. This is Charlene, how may I help you?" After a brief explanation, she got me to the next level. She was so sweet and sympathetic which I guess was a prerequisite in that job. Spent the next 20 minutes with a guy whose only mission, it seemed, was to find out how I got that number! He never did and won't unless he owns a Hatt. But after a while (another story) he relented and started the process to buy back my pickup.

I send out my 16-92 injectors (DDEC) to RPM Diesel every two years for inspection/cleaning. They will always find several that are not right and either fix or replace them. No problems in 4500+ hours.

I do not know all the details but i got some drift that DD has changed makers .I do not know all the details for sure but mine were a P O S.If you got a good set consider your self lucky.

When I had my 892's rebuilt several years ago, 12 of the 16 Reliabult injectors failed either on the sea trial or within 30 days. I had to actually threaten a class action to get Detroit to refund my money (but none of the labor charges for the fellow who installed pulled and then reinstalled Interstate McBee injectors). While my lawyer's letter got the job done, I hate to represent myself working for free. Stay away from Reliabuilts.
