This is in an unmarked box, never seen anything like it (other than valve springs) on the vessel. Thoughts?

That is a seal for the shaft of a water pump. The spring compresses two typically ceramic rings against each other providing a slip surface with sufficient tension to seal in the water in the impeller volute
