I probably know the answer but I'll ask anyway. Do you have to haul the boat to change the packing in the rudder shafts. Found a leak under master stateroom bed and was able to tighten it up enough to stop it. Should have had it changed last Nov. when I had the shafts packing changed. I did not even think about the rudders. Any help will be appreciated.

while it certainly makes it easier to do it out of the water it can be done. you will get some water pouring in while you are working on it so be prepared. make sure you have a good tool for removing the old stuffing and the new stuff cut and ready to go.
 
It's fine to do in the water have all your stuff ready water will be coming in but its manageable you wouldn't want to head to the store to pick something up that you forgot with the gland apart .a packing extractor makes the Job go pretty smooth as long as you don't have to dig out really old packing.
