  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
Seems to be 12 volt problem time on the forum.

The boat is a 1981 Series I 48MY with 6V92 TA's 425HP.

Normally when I start the port side, the volt meters do not show a charge unless/until I rev it up to 1200 RPM or so, then I immediately get a steady 13.8-14 volts at any RPM for as long as it's running. Sunday, when started it would not charge at al. I shut it off and re-started and it reluctantly got to 13.8 after some seconds at 1200-1400 rpm. It remained there for the three hour trip. Any thoughts? I still have another 1200 miles to go for this season.

PS, both bridge and lower helm showed the same readings.

get a meter and when the problem occurs again, check the voltage at the battery before you try to get the gauges to work.

You like have a self excited alternator, if so that is normal. The alternator needs RPM to cycle on.

OK, I understand that, but one time it would not cycle on with increased RPM, and the second time it did, but slowly. ??

Stuck or faulty fuel rate relay?
