Hatteras Model
60' CONV -Series I (1978 - 1986)
I'm in the process of replacing my original Galley Maid windlass on my 1980 60' Sportfish. I'm convinced that the beast is dead because the people from Galley Maid sounded surprised that one of their original models was still out here.

I'm seriously looking at the Lewmar V4 24volt low profile. Does anyone have any experience with this model/brand? let me know what you think. Would you go for foot pedals or a plug in handheld remote control?

"I'm convinced that the beast is dead because the people from Galley Maid sounded surprised that one of their original models was still out here."

afaik, mine is original or near original...

i removed my galleymaid waterpump yesterday to see if i can fix the seal, the beast must weigth 15lbs! talk about overbuilt!

Don't give up on the old girl unless you really just want a new one. New replacement motors are available. I had mine rebuilt for about $140, but they could have provide me a new one for around $175. If you clean them out, and replace the lube oil, they run just fine.

Ditto the previous posts on the GalleyMaid Windlass. I just pulled mine last winter and sent it in to GM for a rebuild. Works great now and man is it heavy. Maybe you didn't talk to the right person. Call again and talk to Rick. He is the windlass guy and he will help you troubleshoot that beast.

i like Galley Maid. why? not just because their stuff seems to be jsut as overbuilt as an old Hatts. but because it's nice to call a company and have a human being pick the phone and give you the answer you need right away without you call being bounced from service rep to service rep with agravating musac in between...

i jsut called them to ask how to get to the seal off the water pump... quick answer on the phone. can't beat that.

I took mine apart, the gearbox was half full of water (the other half sludgey oil) The top O-ring had failed and let a LOT of water in.

Some diesel to soak it in and clean it out, and then some brake cleaner to get rid of the sludge, I refill with synthetic hypoid gear lube, new gasket, and she was as good as new.

The damn thing is indestructable. I have no idea how long it was half full of water, but it could have been as long as a year (since last time I pulled the plugs and changed the oil in her)

Now tell me - what are the odds ANYTHING you buy today would survive that abuse?

'Nuff said.

I replaced my windlass with a Lofrans low profile. You can look at their models on the Muir web page along with other brands. You will need to buy a unit with Extra deck clearance. Most models only allow for 2" of thickness and most Hatteras Yachts have 4"+- of deck at the pulpit. I also purchased a wireless remote from Anchorlift so I could operate the unit from the flybridge and added the plugin hand held as a backup. If you see a unit you like you can buy it through Defender Marine at a good price and the wireless control for Anchorlift at (954) 328-6979. Good Luck

Microkap,
If you are still going to replace your winch I would be interested in your old one. Let me know what you decide to do.

The windlass is coming off tomorrow hopefully, so I will keep you posted. It is a Galley Maid with just a capstan, no gypsy for chain. Let me know if you are still interested.

Larry,
Yes I am still interested. E-mail me with the particulars ( what broke, price etc )
Thanks, Fred

I have a capstan and deck plate from a GalleyMaid Model BB as well as the electrical control box (32v). When I upgraded mine to chain, these were the parts that were no longer used. If anyone needs them, let me know.

The windlass was removed on Saturday afternoon. I'm sorry to say that it was a big piece of rust and whole parts of the gearbox were crumbling off. It was better left to the garbage than shipping to someone to sell to or refinish. It was beyond repair, but 25 years of service is pretty good for a model that was rope only and Galley Maid's first model.

Does anyone have any suggestions for installing a 24V Lewmar on a 32V boat. The only one I can come up with is a separate charger and 2 12V batteries dedicated for the windlass. Any help would be appreciated. It's a Lewmar V4 Low Profile.

Larry

try to get the may-june issue of PAssage Maker, they had a long article on powering windlass, thrusters, etc...

you may still find it at west marines or local book store.

good in depth article. like most of their articles... it's the best boating magazine.

if you can't find it, let me know, I'll try to fax or email it to you.

From a previous post, I had gone to the local West Marine to see if they still had the May/June 2005 issue, but they're already out of it. I would appreciate it if you would email/fax it to me.

My email address is shoretoplz@aol.com or my fax number is 732-758-1837. Thank you for all of your help. This is a great site and I'm so glad that I found it.

I can't seem to find my issue or I would fax it to you. You can, however, go to the Passagemaker web site and order past issues if someone else doesn't get that to you.

I get every issue of PassageMaker mag and looked through the June 2005 issue and didn't see any article you describe. Maybe it was another issue. I'll look to see if I can find anything. I can email the article once I find it.
Ron

Larry, i faxed it to you, you should have received page 118 thru 125.

Pascal,

Can you please fax it to me also.

Thanks in advance!

Nick

Thank you for the fax. I think it will be most helpful.

Happy Boating!
