I am wondering what everyone is using as far as anchor size on their boats. We are updating from our current CQR to a Mantus M2.

Mantus recommends a 125lb but the Galley Maid Windlass guys think I should go with a 105lb. I would prefer the lighter anchor in case I need to haul it up by hand if the windlass fails. It would also be less strain on the windlass.

I am using 3/8, all chain, as rode, and that is heavy as well.

Thoughts?

We’re in the California, Delta, and anchor, mainly in mud. Water is never more than 30 feet deep. We use a 60 pound CQR and it works more than perfectly.

With all due respect to Rick over at galley maid, he is an engineer / machinist… not a boater :). I would listen to the anchor manufacturer.

That said a 105 pounder should be enough. I used to have a 105 Bruce on a wide beam skylounge 70 footer and it was adequate.

It also depends on your usage. If you anchor a lot especially in deeper water where scope could be a problem, go for the bigger one. For more “casual” use the 105 will be fine.

Just realized yours was a 58 footer. The 60 works great on my 53 but I agree 105 would be more than enough.

That is what we currently have. Plus a Fortress. They work great on the ICW but we want something for Bahamas.

It was Rick that I spoke with. His concern seemed to be the capacity of the windlass. We rarely anchor in more than 15 feet. We mostly anchor in the Bahamas. We currently have a CQR and a Fortress for use on the ICW, but they have given us some issues in the islands.

Thanks for the feedback.

Those galley maid windlasses are reduction-geared and extremely overbuilt, the difference between a 120lb and a 105lb anchor isn't going to bother that thing. When it comes to anchors my experience has been bigger is always better as long as you have a windlass. If you don't have one, then it's another story. But you do, so get the 120lb.

I used 110lbs and 176 lbs Bruce - Claws in the Bahamas for 13/14 years anchoring close to 100 times a year and I can count on the finger of one hand the number of time they failed to set the first time. They ve held us firm in the Derecho of 2016 between the majors off Staniel.

A third of the cost of a mantus.

Now I’m stuck with Poole anchors on the 116 and I miss the Bruce. Earlier this year I upgraded the ridiculously small 200 pounder to a 400 pounder I got from… Sams. Left over Hatteras stock!

Fortress don’t work well in the Bahamas because they often don’t reset in tidal anchorages

Dito on the claw, I use a 110.

Hey, We have a 1979 58 MY, that weighs 84,00 Lbs. We have a Rocha 55, it weighs 121 lbs.

we have travelled from New England, the mud of the Chesapeake, the Bahamas, all over Florida,
this anchor has never not set and has never dragged, even in a few 40 k blows. We also us all 3/8
chain. The Galley maid windless has never had a problem hauling. The anchor digs in so well, we
do need to use the boat to break it free occasionally..

great anchor..

I have a Rocna Vulcan 55 kg on the 58 LRC and it has served me VERY well. Several 40-50 knot blows in New England including deep water in Block Island.

125 pound Mantus M2 with all 3/8" G4 chain on factory Galley Maid windlass and no mods to the pulpit. Not too many "hours" on it but it's held our 67CMY in a couple 30-40 kt gusting storms.
