  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1981 - 1984)
Finally closing in on becoming a Hatteras owner. Had surveys done last Thursday and were unable to locate the HIN on the transom. Is there an alternate location?

1983 46HP

Try engine room bulkhead for a small metal plate with hull number

Sometimes the HIN gets marked on various parts as they are made so they end up on the correct boat at the factory. Such as the underside of a drawer, inside of a cabinet, edge or bottom of hatch/door, etc.

If you are looking for an HIN for the bank or insurance company it should be a 12 digit number with the last 2 digits the year of the boat. It is not just the hull number. Hatteras is one of the worst manufacturers for putting a complete HIN on there boats. If I Remember correctly they were required after about 1978. Some Hatts I survey have them others do not. The plate in the engine room if you can find it will have the hull number and model number, but it might not be a complete HIN. You might look on the Coast Guard document if it is a Documented vessel, there is a place for the HIN on the document, otherwise you may just be out of luck. Good luck, John

Or see if Sams can complete the puzzle from just the hull number.

I was looking for a complete HIN. My surveyor is going back to the boat today and re-look at the transom. May scrap some paint if needed. This is for bank purposes. Haven't sent anything to insurance yet....

HIN became required in 1972.

It is either permanently attached to or engraved/ etched in the hull on the starboard rear corner.

They often are painted over and can not be read. I believe the number should be on the previous owners registration and documentation and a plate can be made to make it compliant.

Check your registration. I found mine in the engine room port side and on the transom.

Where at in the port side engine room?Found a tag but was still hoping to find the full HIN.

Has anyone seen it in the rope locker before?

It’s a wooden plaque that the prior owner made and it’s attached to the intake vent.

Rusty, if that is a 6 or seven digit number it is not the HIN, it is your documentation number, they are carved into a board many times. John

Never checked that. I’ll check the two locations next Monday. Thanks John and Merry Christmas. 🎁🎄

Mine was on a little bronze plate attached to the transom by four little screws. It was surprising that it was still there. I took it off and cleaned it up and mounted it to the chase inside the cabin. Sooner or later it would have fallen off.

On my 82 HP, the only numbers I found tags were the HIN on the engraved on the stbd top corner

of the transom. Also the factory tag was screwed down on the fuel manifold.
