I'm currently switching over to spin on filters for the Allison m20 tranny.

My question is, can I reinstall the filter up side down? Saves space and easier to service.

Thanks
Mario

changing it would be a mess. But to answer your question it is just a filter and oil is forces through it should not be but let some of the experts answer.

Are there check valves? If so will they be affected?

Mine are mounted on the companionway walls threads up. Works great.

I never could understand why I'd want to make this particular conversion, so never did. The old canisters have a nice drain and are pretty easy to change out. What's the point?

We have remote mounted spin-ons for the engine and tranny, mounted side by side in each engine room at chest-high level with the filters mounted right-side up. The same Baldwin filter is used for both. Very handy and takes about two minutes to change and no oil spillage. I do not believe these particular filters have a standpipe so, in theory, any oil remaining in the filter would dump out if mounted upside down. OTOH, in reality, the oil in the filter would drain back into the engine/transmission after shutdown so I suspect that very little oil would actually dump from an upside down filter as long as the filter is mounted higher than the sump.

I use Baldwin filters on my Ferrari 328 which DOES mount them upside down. But since that specific filter has a standpipe, the filter can be full of oil and only a few drops are spilled when the filter is unscrewed.

Fishing under the bridge to the east of your home christmas Eave. If i had of known which was yours i could have droped of a few trout.
I changed my oil filters just for being easy simply unscrew and replace. I have not replaced the transmissions ones just because of the amount of pressure there. I know and see a lot that have and have no problem. I keep wanting to because of the leak factor there. I have yet to change it when it did not leak at the first start of run.

Several times over the years I've seen these spin on filters blow apart where they were crimped on to the base. Once on an aircraft engine. Wix blamed it on corrosion at the joint of the base and the can. Filter was 6months old and in service for 75 hours. I personally think 125psi working pressure is too much for a spin on filter. Who knows what pressure spikes their could be. I don't change the trans filters that often. What's the point? It's not like there's a bunch of containment so from combustion in the oil like the engine filters. And if theirs that much clutch material in the oil the trans is F'D anyhow.

I agree that some filters may be questionable based on rated pressure. I know of several instances where auto oil filters of a certain well known brand ruptured at the correct pressure spec for a particular car engine - 85 PSI.

But the Baldwin spin ons can easily accept Allison tranny pressures per Baldwin's specs from their website:

Maximum Working Pressures to:
500 psi / 3450 kPa / 34.5 bar
Minimum Rated Static Burst to:
1000 psi / 6900 kPa / 69.0 bar

I have always used the DD filters with no issues. I'm sure they are probably make by Wix or Baldwin.
