Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Does it make any difference which way round the water runs through the compressor units?

My two units, marine air 12k & 16K both have stickers indicating inlet is lower and outlet is upper with horizontal coil. Old original cruiseair units were same arrangement. it must matter if the manufacturer wants it one way.

They should be marked. I guess it depends on which way the gas is flowing in the coils

You would want it flowing in the opposite direction to the water flow, right?

Actually that does not make a huge difference. You will want a constant water flow without air in it, so water flow from below upwards is the logical choice.

Actually it does. The units are usually marked with in/out on the appropriate fittings, and the water flow direction is important just like air flow in a land unit. It's meant to maximize the cooling effect of the water. However, during maintenance/repair I would reverse the flow in my units (units weren't running) to flush out the lines/units.
