  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
As posted the aircon compressor for my middle stateroom is toast
It would be easy to put an all in one unit rather than a sli unit in this stateroom as it is a few feet from the aircon
water pump
Are there any downsides to doing this

It will be noisy with the compressor right under the bed.
It will mean sea water flowing through the stateroom instead of contained in the engine room if there is a leak.
You will have to run some new wiring.

That's all I can think of.

The earlier 53s have a closet in the forward corner of the mid ship SRs with the AH at the top. You can put a self contained at the bottom, right above the cabinetry hiding the exhaust, and a duct going up to the outlet, it should be pretty quiet. Maybe a box with soundproofing will help.

I m not a big Fan of self contained but in this case it s probably worth it.

Double soils band clamps and quality hoses will be fine as well.

He's got a 1981. The AH is under the bunk.

Correct The AH is under the bunk.
I have just got back from visiting Ocean Breeze. They said l needed an R22 compressor to be compatible with my AH
They were not confident of finding a suitable compressor

What’s between the foot of the outboard bed and the ER bulkhead? No closet as on the earlier boats?

There is a closet Pascal but the air handler is under the hull side bed

Well if you are switching to a self contained, you don’t have to put it in the same location.

When I started combining the mid ship and master, the condenser for the master failed. As a stop gap, I got a 16k BTU self contained that was on sale at Defender for… $999… not a typo $999…and installed it at the bottom of the mid ship closet with a vent at the top. It worked fine. Later on when I redid the entire AirCon with chillers, I put the new AH in the same location. So no need to but it under the bunk

Just had Ocean Breeze quotes for 6K units
Compressor unit for existing split system $ 2700+tax ex factory not installed
Stand alone unit $2100 +taxes factory not installed
When l said they were expensive they said they were much better quality than Dometic
Will probably go with a cheaper brand stand alone

Having had several ocean breeze units over the years, I can confirm that is not a sales pitch. They are a much higher quality product than dometic. I have never had anything I've bought from them fail, which is way more than I can say for dometic whose stuff lasts a few years and then you have to replace it again.

Webasto 6k 110v units from Citimarine store are $2,100.

So, Ocean Breeze doesn't seem more expensive really?

What am I missing?
