air compressor/tank

I'm about 99% through a refurb of my air system (tank, hoses, regulator, etc.) and I noticed that a check valve on the larger hose from the compressor to the tank was destroyed (i.e. lose pieces inside). I don't think this check valve is an original Hatt part and I question whether it's even necessary. Any opinions?

Not sure if the check valve is a Hatteras part. There should be a check valve somewhere between compressor and the tank. The check valve allows the compressor to start with no load from the compressed air in the tank and it also keeps the compressed air from leaking out of the tank through the compressor or unloading valve.
