Hello all,

I've just done the raw water Barnacle Buster flush. Seemed to go really well. Everything seems much cleaner and the water in the flushing bucket was unbelievably dirty. The engines are 6V92TTA

One thing only seems to have arisen as a consequence. I have a weeping raw water pipe on the heat exchanger input side. The one between the fuel cooler and the heat exchanger. It's 2" O.D. and has a 90 degree bend. I know it's a weep as I've scoured the pipe back so there is no paint on the weep point and the very fine drip looks at first like water coming through paper towel.

Here is the question. I need to make a new pipe - what is the pipe made of now? It looks like copper but is also a bit brassy - is that cupronickel? I would love to make it from 316 stainless steel but I'm worried about dissimilar metals in the raw water circuit.

Can anyone please advise what the pipe I have now is made of and whether or not I can remake in stainless or cupronickel or copper?

Any advice is kindly appreciated.

Thanks, Bill.

Hi Bill,
I went through the same thing with my 871's.
I bought a new pipe from Detroit Diesel.
They had to order it and it took about 3 weeks.
I considered making a new one but it takes a special mandrel to bend that type of pipe and yes it is not brass or copper.

I have seen some who replace that pipe configuration with hose but I don't think it look as nice as the correct pipe.

Bill, I used hose on one and had the other one braised as it was a single pin hole. Many years ago Genesis opined the reason these pipes corrode is they are painted then installed. Raw water migrates under the paint and he suggested not painting the ends that are under the hoses.

Another possible solution, take it to radiator repair shop and they should be able
to repair.
