Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Considering buying a 1964 41' Double Cabin with Gas 440's. Can anyone steer me on this model??? It is fiberglass, as I'm sure you all know, but doesn't have the Diesels I've been used to in the past. It's in the Great Lakes and not salt water. Just looking for any history on major design problems or any other major issues. This would be my second hatt. Any imput would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

Is this the one on eBay? If so, looks like a good boat for the money.

You're not going far with gas but maybe that's OK. Condition is everything and if the boat suits your needs, it may be perfect for you.

No, this one's not on ebay. It's being sold in a local yard. Thanks for the input. What did you mean by "..not going very far with gas.." thanks for the help.

Gas price aside, 41' is beyond what a pair of gas engines should be pushing around. 37' or 17,000 lbs is about the limit for gas applications. Fuel economy and performance will not be great. BUT, if your plan is to just putter local waters, you may be OK with gas.

Just my two cents worth ... but you need to read the new posting about ethanol and fiberglass fuel tanks ... you might need to lower the asking price to cover replacing the tanks!

Thanks. I just posted a question on the ethanol question when you were posting a warning to me about the same issue on this tread. Does anyone know how I would find out if the 1964 41' DC I'm looking to buy is/will be affected by the ethanol issues. Does Hatteras know about the problem and can they tell us what models/years/resigns are affected by this???? All input would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

yes, hatteras is aware of the problem, i spoke with them yesterday. unfortunatly, they have no suggestions as to a magic bullet. the smallest boat they make now is 50' and are all diesel so purchasing a tank from them is out.

Thanks Salty. I guess my question: Is it just the Hatteras resin of that vintage, all manufactures of that time, not just Hatteras, and if so, why aren't other owners of different manufactures crying about the same problem?? When talking to Hatteras, do they think it's just a matter of time before everyone with a Gas Hatt will be doomed to the same problem???

Thanking you again in advance.
