  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
I finally got around to replacing the rotted battery shelf and need to reinstall my AC units. New units aren't in the budget unfortunately so I will have to reinstall the dometic R22 split units. I've been searching for a good deal on r22, found 18lbs for $150 but got beat to it. Recommendations for someone near Pompano that can install and fill?

Can't help with the current question, but I removed and replaced the Crusair units with single-piece units last year (killing the large-project budget for a year). All my compressors had seized, and when I opened them up while removing them I found a LOT of leak dye in the systems. I used to be a service manager for a truck and trailer AC and R franchise dealership, and we had a rule cast in stone, never to use dye in a system. It reacts with compressor oil and will corrode internal compoents. If you are near FT Myers and want to see my installations, let me know and we can work out a tour.

If you still have the original blue cruisairs don't ever change those out. Just have the compressors, sensors, and capacitors replaced when they fail, which isn't that often. They last basically forever, none of the new stuff does.

The only caveat I will add there, is that if a leak develops, don't let anyone put leak dye in the system - It will kill the seals in the compressor and damage the bearings. However, our Crusair units were past the pont of rescue when we converted to single-piece units.

I really want to get away from R22, I'm willing to give ocean breeze a chance with the prices they quoted me.

The predicted r22 apocalypse has been a total non-issue for me. I keep a set of manifold gauges and a 5lb can onboard for a quick fix if I’m away from the dock. This is my third boat I’ve dragged it to, that’s how long it’s lasted. Unless there’s a big problem they don’t really leak that quickly. Pretty much every boat out there has that one unit where for whatever reason you have to top it up with a few ounces once every year or two. You can get a 10lb can of it for $300 something on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2340510590...Wb6GvEoteKmHBPFXSShZMGFe2fsB|tkp:BFBMwuqsiZlg
