Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Hi everybody. My name is Thomas Slane (19), grandson of Willis Slane, founder of Hatteras, and son of Tom Slane of Slane Marine. For the past 10 years or so, I have been perfecting my artistic abilities. Until now, I only did this for my own personal enjoyment. I have been contemplating this idea for around a year and have finally decided to go for it. I want to be able to share my art with not only myself, but all of the Hatteras owners out there.

This being a Hatteras forum, I figured it would be a good place to start just to see how many Hatteras owners would be interested in owning a drawing or painting of their Hatteras. I know that the first question that comes to mind is "what will the finished product look like?" I currently do not have any drawings or paintings of boats that I can show as an example. However, if there is enough interest shown, I have no problem turning a few paintings/drawings to show as examples to give everyone an idea as to how the finished product will look.

Let me know what you guys think. I appreciate your time.

Thomas, do you work in watercolors, acrylics, oils? I would be more interested in a painting I think, rather than a drawing. Do you have thoughts yet about size and cost. I understand this is an exploratory venture so I am only asking for a rough idea. I can provide a photograph, 8x10 to work from. Can you post some examples of your work? Maybe some still life drawings or paintings?

Put me on your list, I'd love to help a young artist start their career. Following your dreams is the most exciting thing in life!!

Thomas, I would also like to see some of your work. I am interested in a drawing or painting of my boat and have Hatteras owners as clients that may be interested as well.

Thomas,

Add me to the list for either a drawing or painting.

Paul

I have done work with oils, but I have never been too fond of them. I do my work mainly in pencils, watercolors, and acrylics. I really do not have any idea about the size or cost yet. I will go through my sketchbooks and art pieces and find some pieces to post on here for you guys to see. I'll also work on getting a painting done of my dad's Hatteras so you guys can have something to see as an example. Let me know if you have any more questions. Also, post what size of paintings you would like to have (this will help me get a better idea on pricing).

Thomas, something that I know that I would like and several other owners have inquired about is a profile line drawing. You can see examples of what I mean in some of the later model brochures on the Sam's site. Here is an example of what I mean:

Especially for the early boats that your Grandfather built, this was not available. You might also look at the photo's in the brochures for ideas.

I forgot to say... I'd like a line drawing of a 34' Sport Cruiser.

Thanks for the input Capt. Erich. I'll try to turn one of those out soon to.

Thomas, an acrylic painting approximately 11"high x17" wide (landscape format) would probably be the smallest size of interest. These will be mostly horizontal/landscape layout due to the natural dimensions of a yacht. The next size up might be 18"x24"? I know larger sizes might take quite a while to produce and cost much more.

Please build your list of interested persons, I think you'll get more interest than you might think. Let us know.

I would be interested in a painting of my 37

I am interested too.

Thomas ... great idea! I'm interested also ... probably 11x14 or 12x16 in watercolor of my 1979 43DCMY. I can also send pictures when we get to that point.

I will be happy to "volunteer" my boat as the guniea pig for you to use for some pics!

I would be interested in something done of my boat as well. I think you have struck a nerve! Who wouldn't want their beloved yacht immortalized in a piece of artwork?

Count me in as well. 18" X 24" seems to be a size that I would be most interested in.
A line drawing of my actual boat (tower and so on correct) done from a photo.........?

I started a pencil drawing of the new 60' Hatteras Convertible. I should finish it tomorrow afternoon and I'll scan it in the computer and post it here. Sorry that I do not have any drawings or paintings of boats already completed to show you all...probably should have done that before I started this thread haha.

Ok. I finished the sketch of the 60'. I've posted the link to it below. I scanned it one time, and my scanner didn't even pick up half of the lines on my drawing so I had to go back and slightly darken them. Overall, the scanner just ruins the quality of the drawing but it might give you an idea. (you can even see black spots all in the background if you view the full size of the image...those aren't even on my paper). Anyways, here is the link.

Thomas, nice line drawing, your talent is showing! Hey, as you get yourself lined up to start these paintings/drawings, go back thru this thread and build your list in sequence. I think you'll have plenty of interest as I predicted. Let us know when you are ready for photographs to work from, OK?

It might take me a little time just to get off the ground (i.e. getting time off from work, finishing up some schoolwork, getting the right supplies, making a list of people, etc.). Once I can get off the ground though, it shouldn't be much of a problem. I'm still trying to figure out pricing and what size of paintings I will make available. I'm thinking about charging a standard rate per square inch (different rates will apply to line drawings as opposed to paintings) so that way, everybody can get whatever size they would like.

By the way, let me know what you would want (painting or drawing) and in what size. I want to go ahead and make a list of people in the order that they showed interest in this thread. I'll PM each of the people that showed interest just to get the specifics on what they wanted. If you are interested in this, just post the size (or sizes you were thinking about), whether you want a painting or a drawing, what you are looking to get in the painting/drawing, and any other details you want me to know. Thanks guys.
