  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' LRC (1976 - 1981)
For those who may not have seen the article on Yahoo Business today by Phil Davis of AP, titled "Boat Sellers Seek to Rally Sagging Sales", I offer you a quote.

"MarineMax concentrates on the high-end of the boating market with an average unit cost of $110,000 -- more than four times the industry average, McGill said. The dealerships carry brands such as Boston Whaler and Sea Ray, the BMW and Mercedes equivalents of the boating world."

Sorry got to run to the head, it is happening again!

ROFLOL $110K, four times the industry average? I think I'll go car shopping for a new Mercedes SL if I can pick one up for $27,500!!!

I'll bet the folks at Hatteras would just love to see how Marine Max would represent Boston Whaler and Sea Ray as the BMW and Mercedes equivalents. How do they rate Hatteras for whom they are a dealer. Rolls' and Bentleys who have gone though Pimp My Ride custom makeovers?

Sounds like Phil Davis needs a little reality check. Maybe he should find himself an "expert" to talk to! Maybe somebody who has owned more than one Hatteras, one Sea Ray, or one Boston Whaler, or more than three boats in their entire lifetime! :D

Hey, is Davis Dr. Phil's last name? If so, that guy really is good. I feel much happier now!

The slather the bull crap on real thick so the suckers will think that their Sea Ray is at the top of the quality benchmark. Make me puke will ya! This is the equivalent of telling me that the Ford Festiva is in the same quality class as the BMW 750. If you are dumb enough to believe that then you should be separated from your money.

All things being equal my 1973 Hatteras 48 YF base price cost was $149,000 new, and a new 1973 Chevy cost about $3,800, the average home price was $20,000. Just multiply by a factor of ten and everything is the same. The base price on a quality 50 foot yacht is about $1.5M, the Chevy is $40K, and the house is $200K. So there is no way you can produce a quality boat for less than that price, anyone who tells you that is a LIAR! You get what you pay for ladies and gentlemen.

The only thing different is the goods coming from China where the current labor rate is $0.20 an hour, if you build it here it will cost exactly the same amount in today's dollars as it did 30 years ago. You may be able to do it for slightly less using overseas produced materials, but nothing else really changes.

Marine Max is the master of deception. Just keep spinning it boys, the suckers are still lining up.

Marine Max are the outfit that got in trouble last year for selling a boat that they knew was damaged (as in REALLY damaged), had a shoddy repair, and they flogged it along to someone who then sued them. I can't remember how much they settled it for, but it was not chump change. I don't know much else about them, but they are a BIG outfit. Someone must be happy with them. And aren't they Hatteras new boat dealers? Funny they would describe Sea Ray etc like that; if indeed someone really said that...

Chris, where can you get a house for 2ook? this little shitbox Kathi and I live in , is 900sqf , cost 250k and I'm into it for another 80-90 + all my and my buddies labor time. The Hatt on the other hand , I'm probably only inot that for 125-150K much better value.

BTW, you get any more info on the carbon props? and how the wire auction?
Tim

Come here to NC the going rate is about $100 per square foot for a house on a normal lot. If you want nice trim and granite it will cost you $125 per foot. The wire is available in quantities from 100 feet to 500 feet. Let me know what you need.

I am waiting on my German buddy to make contact with them and get a quote.

, and the house is $200K.
I got a good laugh out of that one.
Obviously you don't live in Southern California. 1200 sq ft dumps with no view in my neighborhood start at 1.5M  and go up from there. Some of the nicer ones (indoor plumbing and everything) get real expensive.

I will give sea ray this...they sure have a good marketing program. They are able to get many, many people to pay very high prices for something that I don't feel is worth it so kudos to their marketing team! My slip neighbor does have a new sea ray though...a 340...moved up from a 300 that he bought last year. It was compliments of sea ray b/c the 2 different 300's they gave him totally had electrical issues that could never be fixed. Problem was so bad they finally gave him a 340 for almost no increase in cost. Made him happy after a year of constant trouble!

Hey Tony, I reckon you showed Sea Ray what you really thought about their boats huh? :D

Ah come on, somebody had to say it!
