  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
It's been almost 3 years since I posted asking help regarding exhaust leak discovered in August 2013. The clamp connecting the 671 turbo to the exhaust pipe failed. With kind assistance of forum members I was able to repair the problem and get the boat back in service for a scheduled boat trip. It did not occur to me then to consider the likelihood of a similar problem with the starboard engine. Last week the mirror image problem occurred. I wish I'd at least purchased duplicate replacement parts. Thankfully I posted information on how I perform the repairs which is helpful now. It seems logical with hindsight that twin engines in the same environment will probably suffer similar failures close in time. Regards,

Amen, that's why I changed every hose clamp, about 140 of them, when four clamps broke in a single trip south.

We tell customers, and sometimes they tell us... "you don't buy one shoe."

Completely agree. That's why last month I changed 2 headlights on my wife's car when only 1 burned out. I will say that when I saw the thread title I was expecting a more "interesting lesson about twins" to be discussed.

Usually when something breaks on the boat , I buy three , one to fix the one that broke, one for the other side and a spare. Most times I never need the spare ..................Pat

Right.... When are you getting that other governor done? ;)

You had to bring that up? Now I'll be having nightmares about that again. When the first one failed that was the first question I asked. Every mechanic I spoke to including the Detroit dealer that did the work said, They rarely see one fail and only one saw a failure like mine. That was the guy who diagnosed the problem without ever seeing the engine. They don't usually touch them even during a major. I'll change it out when I take the blowers off for service or if I need to clean the after coolers.

Actually, that was aimed at doc g's other generator.

But you should have that governor looked at too.

Here in MD, we like the governor we have. We're not replacing him unless we absolutely have to.

Boat is sold . I also realized that the governor needed to be oiled separately because I had a really good guy that does injector pumps , governors, injectors and that kinda stuff work on the old one and alert me to that anomaly........................I think his name was DERRICK or SCROD or something like that ....................................Pat

Yeah, I've heard stories about that guy. None of them good.

Sorry to hear you've parted with the boat. Hopefully there's another Hatteras in the wings.

Yes , 1999, 74 SD bought last summer !!!!!!!!!!!! aka my other full time job ........Pat

Atta Guy! Congratulations and best of luck with the extra career.

Well, as I had to remove half the front clip just to get to the bulb on her Yukon XL I decided the broken side was enough. :(

Volvo was simple. Took less than 1/2 hour to do both. My Audi had to go to the dealer and cost $800 to change both. Still did them both at the same time even though only one failed.
