Forgive me if this has been mentioned before (no search results) but just finished an interesting book:

Author: Dava Sobel

Story about the trials of trying to identify longitude while at sea.

I second it. The newer versions of the book have a lot more pictures, all of which are very interesting. With my research of early maritime history in the northwest, I've read a great deal about the difficult problems determing longitude. Latitude was no problem at all. But, if ancient mariners had a clock like we all wear on our wrists, they could have determined longitude almost to the foot!
