  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I have Cruisairs AC on my boat,16,000 btu.,2 units. In the heat mode. With 51deg water temp. What kind of heat temp should I be getting in the boat? How can I check to see if the unit is in the heat mode? Bill

Was on my boat last night approx temp the same. Was getting approx 85 degrees out of my cruisair units. I have the SMX digital controls so I just set the unit to the temp I need. Do you have the SMX?

If all is well, you should have no trouble heating your 43DC in those conditions. Our 43DC (1975) heated real well every spring. In fact, I can remember pulling into Cheyboygen on April 10th one year and the marina owner said that had we tried it a week earlier, he'd have had to pull us in through the ice.

And, last weekend in the snowstorm and 40mph winds at Montague, MI, my 53 was nice an toasty with just the Cruiseairs. Maybe yours are either not switching to heat or they are low on freon.

I've successfully overnighted on my boat with outside air temps in the 20s and water temps right around 50, and was toasty.

Nothing other than the reverse-cycle AC units on mine....

Eather I'm not setting the controls correct. They are the manual type three knobs. Or something is wrong. I would guess it could be the freon being low ,after setting for 2.5 years. I supose I need to get my A/C man. Maybe I didn't let them run long enough? Thanks. Bill

The reversing valves could be stuck. On mine you can actually tap them with a (small!) hammer. My AC guy said that in the cold season make sure I ran them in the airconditioning mode at least once per month and in the summer, in heat mode once a month. This ensures the valves are cycled and dont get stuck.
Also be sure that the raw water pump is running, not just the ac units.

Now thats the kind of repairs I like to have. I got hammers! I'll try that tomarrow. Thanks, A lot cheaper than freon. Now to find that valve. Bill

If the units are low on freon then the valve at the units will frost up. One of mine was low on freon this past Fall and would just barely heat ... topped off the freon and it will run you out of the boat! The units can cool without a full charge of freon ... but not heat.

Even at 30 degree outside air temp and 40 degree water temps, Crusair 16's will put out air warm enough to feel nice and warm to your hand in the vent air, and they'll heat the boat to where you have to turn them down. With the original style 3 knob controls, you just set the "cool-warm knob all the way counter-clockwise to warm, turn the fan speed knob all the way clockwise to high, and turn the start knob to start for 15 seconds and then to "run". It should be pumping water out the water outlet vent on the hull and should be blowing warm air in a minute or two.

Doug

If your units are operating properly, you should have heat coming out of the vent in just a few seconds after you turn the unit on. As stated above, make sure your pump is pumping water overboard.

Still no A/C or heat. The tube out of valve runs Hot Hot.No chill any place on the unit. I can feel it comming and I think its going to hurt. CHA-CHING. Bill

Well, if you have seawater going through the coil, then either the refrigerant is low, the reversing valve is stuck, or the compressor isn't compressing. Either way, you need an A/C guy out there, I think. Sorry. :(

I got hold of my A/C man today. He said he would send out a lepprecon to repair it. Just have that pot of gold ready. $160.00 bucks. Not bad if thats all he needs to fixit. Bill
