  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
42' LRC - Mark II (1980 - 1985)
For those of you with experience with Walker AirSeps; one of my turbos is throwing some oil than the other. See picture - the other one is dry. First, is this normal/"within spec"? It looks perhaps worse than it is. This is the result of some 100 hours, mostly at 1250rpm though, but the occasional wot as well. What needs to be fixed? Or is this reason why some invest in AirSeps and levewit be with that? Thanks for your input 😊Kristian

That isn't a Walker Airsep. It looks like a plain filter with a foam sock over it.

Oil won't come out of the turbo, It is sucked into the engine. Where are your crankcase vent hoses? Is the elbow on the right side of the image the vent from the rocker cover breather?

Hi, I am very aware that the filter is not an Airsep. The elbow you're referring is the rocket cover vent, yes. If I understood you correctly, the oil is probably coming from this vent rather than the turbo then?

I have an 8v71ti with similar 'original' filters. Not interested in a crankcase breather setup right now but I'd love to get rid of the oily sponge covers and convert to a K&M or similar product. Does anybody have a part number and good source for such a filter upgrade? Thanks. Jon

If there is no cover on that vent then yes, that is the source of your oil.

That is where the oil is coming from. I would think just about everything in your engine room must have a fine coating of lube oil. That condition will foul up the turbo and aftercooler if you have one in no time.

You can make a catch can to collect the oil and return the vapors to the intake. You can run your airbox drain tubes to it as well. I would think your turbos, blowers, airboxes and everything else in the machinery spaces will be needing a good "scrubbin" by now.

A K&N is an oily sponge.

Well I guess it makes no sense to replace one oily sponge with another. I look at some CCV's. Thanks.

It's just the point that a K&N is an oiled gauze filter. I'm not saying they're bad, although since filtration requirements on a boat are minimal they are a bit of overkill.

Seaboard Marine make a very good crankcase ventilation device called an Envirovent. You should ask them if they make them for DDs. I have a set on my Cummins diesels and I have been very happy with them.

If you want K&N filters mine were RD 1460. But just call them and give them your cubic inches and horsepower and they will tell you what you need, they are very easy to work with and very knowledgeable. John

Why bother asking someone to make something special that is as of yet untested in this particular application when there are setups out there now off the shelf that work perfectly fine?

Second the Racor CCV, easy owner installation. John

Because I think they work better, they cost less than CCVs, and because everything I've ever bought from Seaboard Marine has worked perfectly from day one. I think the Envirovent is a better product than the CCV. Also better than the Airsep.

Also, I was not suggesting that Seaboard make them up specially for the DDs. I do not think they do special orders of that kind. They make them for a variety of engines and it's possible they make a kit for DDs as a retrofit. Based on my experience with them and other products for the same use, these are a lot better than the other products I've owned.

I have the orig filters on my 8v71Ti's and was thinking of upgrading to the walker air sep or K&N but never heard of the envirovent. The walker is a bit pricey for what they are so that went to my later list.

What make you think they are better than the CCV?

I have not used CCVs on my Cummins engines- I fitted these from the beginning. The CCVs I had on my Cat engines did not work very well. They were a replacement for AirSeps, which didn't work very well either. By not working well, what I mean is oil mist through the engine room and going into the turbos. I have none of those problems now.

I'm recommending that he inquire about a product that I've had a good experience with, from a vendor that I have had many good experiences with.

OK, I called them and they do not make them for DDs, so, my mistake.
