  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
I found at Carquest, the 8v195 batteries for 209.99. I compared the specification with the Deka 8v195 and they are the same. Has anyone any knowledge about any difference?

Other than the fact that your boat calls for an 819 there may be little difference. Size being the same it comes down to plate size and thickness along with the structural support of them.

East Penn (Deka) makes Carquest. To my knowledge they are the only maker of the 8v195. That's a really good price. If all you need is a starting battery, you can get by with these (they really spun my 8v92s nicely), but as Scott notes it is not what is specified. It is smaller and much lighter than an 819. I used the 819 form -factor Rolls over on my house/port starter bank.

Here is a guide to who makes batteries for who, worldwide:

I've had the 8 195s in our 53 for 3 years now and so far they have been great. They were recommended over the 819s by the local shop that does a lot of the boat batt supplies in the area and had both in stock. I was a bit skeptical but figured I'd give them a try. I've been very pleased with them.

But I won't be able to claim they worked as well as 819s until they have 5 years on them. ;)

Mike no offense but your boat is not used much since your living south of the border. Since the number of charge and discharge cycles and use impacts battery life its not a real world test.

I think batteries are THE most important item on a boat. They start your engines, run your bilge pumps, electronics, etc. They ARE the lifeline that keeps you afloat, running, and communicating.

My point is that you can go cheap on some things, but don't do it when it comes to batteries. Buy the best battery that you can get, the right battery for the intended purpose.

Our Deka 8V195's got to season 6 and I'm changing them. The boat is not used with as many discharge cycles as many of you, but a yard 2 seasons ago ran them to ZERO. And we recently had an anchorage challenge with the gen off and extensive windlass use. I did not find a better price in the charleston area than DC battery shipping them up from Miami. $257/battery to the boat, and I sell the cores. Hooray for the Outback charger. I did not make season 3 with the old Marche. I'm in the MikeP combined camp with a separate starting battery for gen #2. No problems yet. did not try carquest, just batteries plus at $307.

BoatsB is quite right to point out that our boat no longer goes through many discharge cycles per season so there might very well be a big difference in battery capability re the 819/195 if all things are equal.

At the same time, I am confident that in our case the combined banks make a noticeable difference in the system capability and longevity. I base that on the fact that when we anchor out, the overnight draw on the batts has yet to drop them below 80% which means they aren't really stressed very much.

I believe that a combined bank where the batteries never get pulled below 80% may be able to accept a a 195 battery and last as long or longer than a conventionally split system using 819s where one of the banks is discharged to a substantially greater level. HOWEVER, I must point out that I have done no scientific testing to "prove" what I believe to be the case.

I hear quite a few people saying 3-6 years on the Deka's. I currently have 8 years on my Rolls and still going strong. Our season is only 5 months, but we anchor out quite a bit and they do get cycled. I know another guy with 11 years on his Rolls and still good.

As difficult as it is to swap out batteries, I want whatever will prolong that job.

I helped the last time. Not again , if I can.

50 bucks will get mine changed this time around. Young hungry guys with strong backs....priceless.

The 195 have flag or std car posts?

That's what I thought so they would have to change out the terminals

Yes, that's correct. You have to install "flag terminals" on the '95s. The place I bought them (Pasco) in Easton MD did that as part of the purchase - asking me which type of terminal I wanted - AND they delivered them to the slip for $207/battery (with core trade in (old batts) which they carried away.

That price was the '11 price.

When I bought my Rolls from Rae Battery, they came with the beefy flag terminals and also a new set of 4/0 connector cables and bolts. Pricey, but well worth the extra $$ IMO.

I installed the same batteries from CARQUEST last spring....so far very happy with them!

Did any Hatts have 8v195 batteries as standard? .

I've always used the 819. That's the one most all of the 32 volt boats used.

I think OEM were the Rolls. The 819 was the direct replacement. The 8v195 are shorter.

You may be right but I thought the rolls was an upgrade and the 819 was standard.

Might have changed over the years but 8v195 was not an oem. It's a lower cost 8 volt battery that is smaller and lighter than the 819.

My 1980 53MY came with Rolls per the original paperwork. They lasted until 1995 (!). 819s since then until I replaced the last set of 819s with 195s.
