  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' MOTOR YACHT (1964 - 1968)
I was looking for 8v batteries from Douglas and found this site.
I asked for a quote for the 8v-21 and 8v-24.
Does anyone have info on this?
The S8V-24 was just over $1200 for 4 batteries shipped to Surf City, NC.
They said:
The battery you requesting is no longer manufactured. Another battery which would be of interest to you for this application is the Specialized S8V-21 and S8V-24. I am attaching a pdf catalogue.

It looked like the 21 is for a Bert and the 24 is for a Hatt.

Last Friday I purchased batteries form Phil at DC Battery. I found them to be very helpful and extrememly patient while I struggled with my decision. I ended up purchasing the Rolls 8HHG25. The fit perfectly in my batteries boxes and provide 275 amp hours per bank (20 hr rate). This morning I ordered the Outback FlexNet DC to add to my VFX3232. Based on my research this should allow me to completely monitor my batteries in great detail. Anyway, I highly recommend Phil at DC Battery.

you can also do a seach on this web on batteries, there's been a lot of threads covering this subject.

I know, I know, we've been over this battery topic again and again, but I just need some quick suggestions here. I have re-read all of the old posts on this and now I think I may be more confused than before.

My boat was launched today and when she splashed, my engines would not crank. The charger had been on just a couple of weeks ago and the water was topped off probably about 4 weeks ago, but still no go. It was a bit embarrassing to have to plug in for a few minutes to allow the charger to assist but they finally did crank. The port first and then I paralleled the stbd and got it going. The batts are Interstate 8v195's that are 6 years old. I knew that it was probably getting about time to replace, but I had hoped to nurse one more season out of them. I guess not.

My choices now are new Interstates, golf cart batts, or Rolls. The other choice is possibly to use one type for the house/inverter bank and another for the start bank. I have had trouble getting complete specs and pricing online, so I may have to make a few phone calls to really evaluate this. It looks like 4 golf cart batts would fit in one box which means 8 batts/bank. That would give some great AH capacity, but it also means I'd need to make up new cables which also factors into the overall cost of changing.

Rolls look great as well, but is the cost justified? I don't think that I would need any new cables, but if I don't get the replacement cell type, I would really have some back-breakers as they are even heavier than the Interstates that are in there now.

Decisions, decisions............

Advice appreciated.

battery prices are going thru the roof due to the price of lead...

my boat has been converted to GC batteries before i got it, using Exide E4800 (four per bank). works great... at current prices that comes to about $400 per bank of 4, about 175AH

plenty of cranking power... never had an issue being on the hook genny off for 24 hours although most of the lights are AC so the house bank is only used for the vacuflushes, pumps, anchor lights...

I get them for a local golf cart guy, he has the best prices i could find anywhere.

Pascal,
Do 4 of those fit in one box? If so, then I'm thinking that 8 would make a great house/inverter bank, while I may need only 4 for the start bank. In fact, maybe I would just stick with the 8v195's for the start bank and put GC batts in the house. I'm going to call that DC battery as it looks like they stock them all and then armed with specifications and relative pricing, maybe I'll be able to make a more informed decision.

Sky I know a lot of guys use the GC batteries and they work but on 2 diffrent boats I've seen problems with the posts burning off. The GCs aren't designed to carry starting amperage the jumpers are fine but the final + and - conections carry to much amperage for the size of the post,

Brian

Cmon Sky, we both know that you can sum up the best choice in 3 words...

Rolls, Rolls and Rolls! :)

Sky, more bad news: Interstate no longer makes the trusty 8V195! Only the bigger/heavier versions available in a few different sizes. I got lucky and my distributor found four new 8V195's sitting in a Texas distributor's warehouse and they delivered them to me a week later.

After all this, it may be time for the Rolls. I know I'll give serious consideration to them when my 8V195's are past their prime (which will hopefully not be for a LONG time)!

GOOD LUCK!

There are still some 8V195 type batteries made. They run about $200 each.

Here is what I found on my first call: Deka's for $286 each or Rolls for $434.

I do see the point on the GC batts. Those terminals don't have much meat to them and I'd hate to melt one off and wreck a battery. Plus the fact that I'd need new connecting cables has pretty much ruled those out.

Alright, Rolls it is. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I found the 8HHG25's for $313/each in Connecticut. Placed the order. Now the fun starts as those babies weigh in at 139lbs each. Ugh.

Sky. Who did you use in Connecticut?? Sounds like a good price .....Pat
