Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
need to replace a 8d battery and was wandering if anybody new of a modular alternative so i can save my back from picking up 160lbs. battery

I believe Rolls makes them in individual cells...

Rolls is the one but the cost is a bit higher.

Ok a lot higher. How much to hire someone to move the battery and save the cost of the rolls?

Moving them myself last year cost me a broken hip and three herniated discs. Don't do it.

thanks, i will wait for my son to help

My 42 LRC had 3 8D batteries for the house bank, next to the hull outboard the Stb engine on a raised platform. I saw no way of getting them out myself and hired the marina to get them out. They did and only broke a few things like an engine room light. The mechanics complained about the job for about 3 years everytime I saw them.

I replaced them with 8 - 6 volt AGMs from Lifeline. That was in 2001 and they are going strong with lots of anchored out nights. Even the 60ish pound AGMs are heavy enough. But I can move them and they require no maintainance at all.

I replaced my 8S's with group 24's, three fit perfectly into the 8D battery box. Did this to my boat in 2004, still zero problems. Paid $55 each at the local Delco wholesale battery depot.
And only replaced two of the 8D's, the rear box on both sides are still empty

"I replaced my 8S's with group 24's, three fit perfectly into the 8D battery box."

Something incorrect in the above, I think...battery sizes can be found at

http://www.rtpnet.org/teaa/bcigroup.html

Group 24 are 10 1/4L x 6 13/16W x 8 7/8H

Group 8D are 20 3/4L x 11 1/8 W x 9 7/8H

So TWO group 24 will fit in an 8D box....

When changing battery sizes consider amp hour capacity, battery box fit, and the need for new battery or additional battery cables....you can replace 12 volts, for example, with 6 volts in series pairs, then paralleled, or multiple 12volt batteries in parallel...

Rob, you put the group 24's in the box with their length across the box's width..

my son and i hauled the bad battery out and we just got back from interstate, they replaced the 8d no charge it was only 12 months old one dead cell looked through the warehouse but they would not credit me just replace what i had (can't really blame them) so i have a new 8d-mhd 1400 cca on the stbd. side and port side is a year old i will consider alternitve next time around maybe 3 group 24's
thanks mark

Thats why I am an interstate dealer.

I pay less than $150 for that battery too.

Not bad. I paid $199 each for mine 4 years ago and that was a good deal then.

thank you for posting this, as I knew three (3) Group 24 Batts are an exact dimensional fit, but you have confirmed it!

Another consideration is to go to the AGM Gel Batts, which have a very long life, and can take a beating, physically and electrically. E.g., they can be completely drained, yet be re-charged quickly and also hold a charge for a long period; can sit upside down, if occurred, without ill effects. USCG uses them with good results. Last I heard was at least 7 years of use. Downside is initial cost at about $140/ea, so about a $150-200 premium vs an 8D, depending on its cost and quality. But the total cost of ownership may be lower over the life!

Description of AGM's is here:

GJH...right you are...I must have calculated wrong...they DO just fit...good to know in case I run out of Wheaties....

I just replaced a pair of 8D's last month and for the first time had a lift assist...it's an easy two person lift, tough for one at my age!!!

I have had better results from the Powermaster brand rather than Interstate.
Powermaster makes two 8D deep cycle, one is about $20 more per battery than the other and my mechanic recommends the more expensive one...that's the one I usually use.

I have had several Interstate 8D batteries last only three years....but the Powermasters I just replaced were also only three years old...one had a bad cell...and I think affected the other which was ok, but not strong, so I replaced both...

For all I know both brands are made by one company; anybody know?? How about Exide and other brands...likely some are under a common manufacturing umbrella.

And for the record, AGM type is actually the best value for deep cycle (house) applications but are more expensive initially.

i am not crazy about powermaster batteries but delco voyager's seam to hold up pretty well i have had two of them in my center console for 5 years without a problem. i don't even remove them in the winter just turn the switch off. i have done a little research and will probaly replace with gel's in 3 years just don't know who's

OMG, you changed those out by yourself in the past?! Are you a former NFL lineman?

Ok, so if I did go the AGM route, what would be a best source for the custom cables needed? Should I assume they would need to be 'made up'. We're talking some heavy cabling here...ideas?

Regarding battery manufactuers, I made this post a while back.

Don't know how old the info is, but my original comments stand.

I thought AGMs needed a smart charger to be proerly charged? No? Anyone know if there are AGM options for those of us with 32v systems? Also, anyone know which batteries have the highest capacity and will still fit in my stock boxes? The port (house) bank is ready for replacement and I'd love to have the highest capacity that will fit...but also want to get at lest 4 years out of them, hopefully 5+. But not sure I'm willing to pay 3x more for Rolls...thoughts?
