871 Block Heaters

Looking for two 871 block heaters. I would prefer the original style that bolt on the side of the block at the water jacket v/s aftermarket hose or magnetic style.

I got one from a truck supply place. I forget the company that made it, but they had it in stock for a 6v92. You pull off an access plate and put the heater in. I forget the wattage...it may not be enough for extreme cold.

They're made by Kim Hotstart and are available.

Just buy 'em from anyone who handles their products - any heavy diesel place (e.g. truck engine store, etc) should be able to get them.

If you look at the Kim website, you will see the places (ports) in your engine that can be configured for the block heater. Most of the 71's are not a problem. Neither are the 8v92s, but the 6v92's that Covington converted do not have any available place to put the immersion type in. Covington used both ports on the side of the block to feed the exhaust manifold jackets.

Just look at the drawings on the Kim website and then make sure your engine has a plug at that site to install it before you buy them.

Correct - for the 6V92s the best option is a PAIR of Wolverine 250W Pad heaters; one on the side of the oil pan, one on the oil cooler housing.

For the others the immersion style (with the thermostats!) are a better solution.

The Wolverines, set up with a thermostat in the engine room, do the job with authority. I put them on Gigabite - they work.

They work well, even if you only use one of the 250 watt heaters. I've used one per engine in CT, and I usually fish right thru Dec. She always starts right up, with minimal smoke. (435hp 6v92 engines). You do need to keep an eye on them, as one of mine fell off after about 3 seasons of use.
