Hatteras Model
58' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1977 - 1980)
My v8 71 has the old canister type oil filter housing the one with the 5/8 bolt
what base seal should I use, the rubber o ring or flat paper one both come
with the new filter, I used the o ring on port side engine and no leak, starb side with o ring leaked, all items were clean and true.
Cheers Stewart

if there is a flat area where the mounting surfaces meet, use the gasket, if there is a groove(channel) just a little bit wider than the o ring where the surfaces meet, use the o ring. my 1977 8v71ti's used the o ring

I use the flat gasket, just make darn sure the old one is out! It'll look like a part of the frame, get under it with a sharp hook to lift it out. The new one goes into a slot that youve got to get right or the gasket will wrinkle and leak.
When I tighten the cannister, I pull it down 100 percent but dont tighten it yet. Back it off 1/4 turn. Twist the can as you spin the stud until it stops. This makes sure everything is seated and centered. Tighten the stud to 50 FtLbs. Thats a pretty good pull on a 1/2" ratchet.
Dont forget the stud gasket too. ws

thanks for the advice Ill let ypou know when I run it .

I had to use a new o ring, flat gasget doesn't fit, no oil leak now
Thanks Stewart

The cannisters are just bad engineering. They always leak and you can't get all of the old gaskets out reliabily. They make a mess in the engine room and can ruin your engine. Look into converting to spin-ons, and remote mounted ones at that. They are worth it. Having them in a reachable spot alone makes the conversion worth while.

I changed my oil filters, 8V71s in 58YF to remote location, in fact all of the filters trans coolant, and oil.

To relocate the oil filters you will likely spend 3 to $400, depending the location you select .

I placed the starboard outbard of the fire ex cylinder, I also added a hook to hlod the drain can , I poke a hole on the filter before removing it, less mess.

The port is on the bulkhead just adt of the foward ER door, a drain can fits below the filter for draining. The hoses are the expensive part of the job, if you do the job yourself.

I have found it to be a benifit.
