Hello,

Having removed the starter motors to get the check valves I have a starter motor question or 2.

Are they left and right handed starter motors for the motors?
I have always assumed the counter rotation of the props is dealt with by the Allison M20L and M20R but don't want to fall into the trap of making an ass of u or me.

In either case would any of the gurus here at HOF know the Delco ? Part numbers for such starter motors?

My sparky reckons giving them a birthday rebuild while they are off is a waste of time and money as he thinks he can buy them pretty cheaply wholesale.

Thanks in advance, regards, Bill.

I am fairly sure that both motors rotate in the same direction, and that one gear just runs in reverse all the time, but you could ask Sam's. I can't recall ever seeing a reverse rotation DD; I'm sure there's one out there someplace but I think probably not in a Hatteras.

There are left and rights. Don't forget t get a starter with a seal, Allison will be a wet flywheel housing, and use a gasket.

I guess my DD mechanic is pulling the wool over my eyes, we just replaced the port starter on the 8v92's in our 1978/58 MY and he installed a counter clockwise rotating starter per the engine model/serial# in my Hatteras owners manual. Everything works fine........

I did PM's on mine a few years back. It included new bearings, brushes, seals and bench test FWIW. I do not recall the cost, but worth it for the peace of mind.

I checked with my Penske mechanic today. He's very good so his view I regard as undoubted. The Detroits are handed motors in twin engine configuration with Allison transmissions. The Allisons get their left and right hand rotation from the motors. So in this instance the starter motors are definitely handed as well.

The Detroits with Allison transmissions are handed engines. One Allison transmission cannot be continuously run in reverse at full power while the other is run in forward. The drives won't take it. Some engine parts have a different rotation and are therefore not interchangeable. Follow the engine data plates.

Later engines with Twin Disc transmissions both turn the same direction and one transmission does run in reverse. On these engines all the parts turn the same direction.

The need for this is so the propellers each turn in opposite directions, cancelling out torque in forward while letting us "walk" the stern sideways in slow reverse.

About 25 years ago when I re-engined with 6V-9TA Detroits and Twin Disc transmissions I was expecting to notice a difference in handling because the engines were no longer cancelling their torque with the former opposite rotations. Didn't happen. With everything bolted down I figured the only difference was in the rotating mass of the crankshaft and pistons and was completely lost when added to the total mass of the boat.
