Hatteras Model
63' COCKPIT MY (1985 - 1987)
Here is a link to the video introduction of this new outboard motor. It has a fixed powerhead and a rotating lower unit with internal powered steer by wire. Retail is $77k.

Finally something that makes my boat purchase look sensible.

Can I just clamp one of those on my swim platform and get rid of my Detroit’s. The wife always tells me how much space we would have if we didn’t have those big ugly engines.

If they where diesels I would concurr. Being gas engines you will also have a lot of empty space in your wallet.

Put it in a bin. Last 6 feet of the MSR now becomes engine room. Engine rooms become guest cabins, mid cabin and remainder of MSR become new MSR.

I’m gonna hang 3 off the back and convert the ER into a wine cellar and humidor 😄😄😄

I would expect this fixed powerhead with rotating lower unit concept to spread across the Mercury line. They will want to spread the R&D expense across as many models as possible and that could include diesel powerheads. Any lower unit that can live with 600hp and gasoline torque can live with 300hp and diesel torque. Perhaps even without the 2-speed transmission to save money and weight and to beef up the drivetrain.

I was thinking that steering change is a good thing. I don't know if it makes the hardware more complex but it has to make managing several OBs easier while providing more degrees of travel.

About the only disadvantage could be in the performance arena where they might like to lock in the drives' alignment. I did not notice an external hard point for that purpose.
