When I bought my LRC the Stb. 6-71N was leaking a qt. per 1/2 hour from a tin valve cover. The PO had purchased 2 cast valve covers from an engine junk yard in Miami, but could not get them on the motors because they hit the thermostat housing. When I took over the project I too found the covers hit the forward housing. I talked to Covington Diesel and several others and they all said the covers are all the same and should fit. Well they don't fit.
I made some shims and moved the whole heat exchanger housing (which includes the thermostat housing back 1/4 inch. Then a few new hoses and home made seal on the raw water line and we are installed.
These covers do not have a breather or an oil input. (the old tin covers did not have them either). Do you folks know if mine may be for 12-71s only? I want to put the other one on but it is not currently leaking and I don;t like moving the exchanger back and making up non Detroit seals and hoses. Any ideas?
