Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
I AM CONSIDERING MOVING UP FROM MY 34C TO A 41C. THE 41C HAS DETROIT 6-53'S, DONT KNOW THE HP. I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD ANY THOUGHTS ON THERE PERFORMANCE OR ABILITY TO PUSH THAT SIZE VESSEL. I HAVE 300HP, 3116 CATS IN MY 34C, AND THE BOAT WILL CRUSE AT 22KNOTS (1.3 MILES PER GALLON) AND WILL TOP OUT AT ABOUT 28KNOTS. HOWEVER I RARLY RUN OVER 15/16 KNOTS. LIKE THEY SAY IF YOUR HAVING FUN WHY HURRY. I DONT EXPECT THE DETROITS TO PERFORM AS THE CATS. BUT I'M WONDERING IF THE TRADE OF MAY BE THAT THE DETROITS MAY USE LESS FUEL. ANY COMMENTS ??????

I don't think you're going to like the performance. Hatts are quite 'beefy'.....

6-53s are 318cid displacement each (6 cyls @ 53cid) Asking for more than 250hp or so from them is too much.

You're far better off finding one with 6-71s if you can.

Also, parts for the 53 series are getting tough to find, and expensive.

Are you sure they are 6-53's?. the older 41's (like mine ) I thought all had 8V53's. Mine claim 285 hp on the option plates and with the way I have her loaded now I think the kayak guys are laughing at me. 30 gph WOT @ 17 knots but I do have a blistered bottom problem.Man that just doesn't sound right does it?. I rebuilt them a few years ago and now with the price of fuel ($2.65/gal) in Ketchikan I wonder if I goofed up and should have repowered with modern 4 strokes.

my 1968 41c has 671n's and is a adequate engine size for the boat,i cruise at 20 knots 22 gph fully loaded. i looked at boat's with 6-53's and 8-53's. the 6-53's were much louder and the horsepower was way over cubic inch displacement (not good) ,if the 6-53's have the lower horsepower rating i dont think they will plane the 41c. the 8-53's are good motors but parts are becoming difficult to find parts and the 283 hp rating is marginal for the 41c
mark

6-71Ns will run forever. They're not terribly loud (compared to a turbo motor), they are, however, typical Detroits (not terribly fuel efficient, heavy and somewhat messy)

If you can get the right price on the boat sticking a pair of modern Cummins engines in it is not a bad idea at all. That will take a LOT of weight out, be much quieter and more fuel efficient, etc.

Of course its expensive......

6-53 are 210hp The cruising speed in a 41 is 14 knots and the top speed 16 knots.
