  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
I am having trouble locating a source for a teak swim platform to replace a damaged one on my 58TC. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Randy- I lost my platform in the Adriatic Sea several years ago when I was bringing Lady Ntina from Catania Italy to Rhodes Greece. Believe it or not it was fastened to the supporting struts with screws insdead of thru bolts. As a result, I bought the teak in Greece, made a Jig, and constructed the platform myself. Came out very nice and professional looking. In your case, I would call Hatteras or Sam's Marine. They should be able to point you in the right direction. Have you considered repairing the damaged platform? A local finish carpenter can do the repairs without much difficulty. One more thing; When you get the price for teak you better be sitting down.

Randy,

Make yourself a nice platform out of something you do not have to do maintenance on. What about purchasing a Fiberglass platform and putting that on. There are hundreds of them avaliable at all of the surplus marine places all over Florida. You should check them out when you come back down, I bet you will find something that requires less maintenance.

Randy- If you want teak materials E-mail Woodworkerssource.net or call them at 800-423-2450.

You are probably better off repairing the one that came on the boat, if it is repairable. An alternative would be a fiberglass one. Beachcomber Fiberglass Technologies in FL used to make them, they may still. I have a deck box made by them and it is first-class, also they matched the color perfectly even though it is gelcoat, not Awlgrip.

I wanted a platform for my '68 41C when I got her. With much research, I found Beach Comber Fiberglass out of Ft. Lauderdale. They had the specs for my specific hull on file, and made an excellent platform that fit my needs, and mounted to the boat as if it belonged there. It was an interesting job as the boat has a curve transom, that it pitched to the rear, so the platform had to be right, and the brackets had to account for the transom angle.

I would buy from them again without hesitation, and don't have to scrub and oil, or sand and varnish a teak platform.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the replies and the suggestions. To be perfectly candid, I am trying to get replacement estimates to satisfy an insurance claim for my damaged platform. To that end, I'm not really looking for an inexpensive alternative to replacement (sorry State Farm, hope you're not seeing this). In fact, once an agreement of value is reached, I plan to purchase either a fiberglass or aluminum platform as I have plenty of brightwork to keep me busy as it is. With that in mind, watch for another thread from me in the future on that subject. I wonder if I could talk State Farm into a $90k platform like I saw on another Hatt (see thread: Adeamo). I could try to justify it to them by convincing them it would offer superior protection to the teak platform previously lost, and would therefore prevent future claims! ;)

Randy, Do a Google search for Woodworking for Watercraft. Place is in Arizona and I have a hunch they are not all that cheap.

Sounds like the perfect recipe! ;) I'll give those boys a call. Thanks for the info.
