From what I can tell, it seems that all series one 58's have DD '92 engines. Is this correct?

Call this a first investigative step in very early consideration of a possible purchase.

Yes, Eric, I know what you told me but the Admiral has expressed an interest and when the Admiral expresses an interest... ;)

The early 58MY's had 8V71's.

Ahh...my kinda' engine! :)

Depends on whether you are talking series I or series II.

Presuming a series I which were made for four years from 77'-80' I have a 79' galley up with 500 hp 92's. While I don't know for sure, I think the prior post is correct in that the 15-10 58's I have seen with 71's were made in 77.

I think the series II's were all 8-92 motors but I suppose if a customer specified 8-71's Hatteras would have obliged.

The detuned motors in my boat have been good to me (knocking wood) but like you I would dearly love a pair of 71's in he. Hell, since I rarely run her any distances on the step, I wouldnt even mind a pair of naturals... if for no other reason than I grow tired of trying to squeeze around the bigger motors. The series II boats have all the room in the world for the bigger mains.

Here are a few with a listing that say 71's but frankly when I was looking half the listings were wrong.

Mike,
There's nothing wrong with 92's if you treat them right.

Mike, I just have to ask....WHY??? As nice as your 53MY is, why would you want to give that up for a 58? I could understand, perhaps, if you were looking for something "different" such as the galley up model, but if you're considering galley down, there really isn't that much difference in these boats. Is the extra 5' somewhere really worth starting all over again?

OR...are you just bored? :D

If you go down this road, I have a friend who may very well jump all over your boat. You've got what he wants. He's looked at a few of these, and yours would be the finest on the market, I'd bet.

X2. Particularly at the lower power ratings that are in the 58MY's.

Thanks all for the info, and thanks Ang for the nice compliment.

Frankly what we do NOW boating-wise is very different than what we did when we bought the 53 and for the time it was in NY. We would like the larger salon and the separate pilot house. When we were looking for a Hatt I specifically wanted side decks and NO separate pilot house. Funny how things change! And yes, we would like the galley up version though that's not a mandatory thing.

I admit that the thought of "starting over" with an unknown boat is a bit daunting and perhaps common sense will prevail, causing us to dump the entire idea before we even get started. A famous yacht broker has a similar view - why go from a 53 to an '8? If you want bigger, go noticeably bigger. But our slip cannot accommodate a wider beam than the 1510's or an overall length of more than 60 ft and we don't want to give up our covered slip for "the outside."

As I said, common sense may ultimately prevail...though it never has before! :)

Ugh. BE HAPPY with what you have! I know, easier said than done.

I think that is good advice, but I have to admit I haven't followed it on occasion. And everyone here is similarly guilty, I venture.

71s at 435 hp here, and it's more power than I need. Hull speed only requires 160 hp total. I'd be happy with a pair of 6v71Ns like the LRCs have.

Mike,
If you want a larger salon and a separate pilothouse, maybe we should work out a trade. I've always wanted the walk around side decks and big back deck. ;)

Thanks Sky but the Admiral says the 58's larger master SR is also a big part of the deal for her.

Frankly, after just one full day of talking about this locally, I can no longer count on my fingers the number of people who indicated that selling our 53 and buying a 58 was not a great idea. The actual phrasing ran the gamut from, "If I had your 53, I wouldn't do it" to "That idea is too stupid for words.!"

But we are continuing to think about it...as we continue to spend money on our 53 - just had new side curtains made/installed, we're are putting in a new oven/cooktop, and we decided to do the entire salon in the Amtico teak/holley. We initially just did the salon amtico from the aft edge of the side doors forward. So I'll be taking out the carpet we installed last year.

YEAH - lets START OVER with a whole different boat! Sitting here at the moment (looking at Yachtworld) it does sound a bit...well...stupid. ;)

If you can find a good one and its priced right why not? If that's what makes you happy go for it. Just be prepared for what your will bring. The prices are way down. The good news is the good ones are selling and yours should be on the upper end of what they're selling for.

What Jack said was my exact suggestion to Mike yesterday. If you can find a 58 that's an absolute movie star at a fair price, go for it!

I think Mike has done everything there is to improve on his 53 and he is getting bored :)

The larger master is great, and so is the PH but the deal killer for me is the lack of ventilation on the art deck. On a 53 (or any MY with side deck and wing doors) you are comfortable on the aft deck with under 10kt breeze. On the 58, no matter how much wind is blowing, you re not getting any. I can't imagine sitting on the art deck of a 58 on a typical summer day on the Chesie!

Looking at the listings on Yachtworld, I'd say you have your work cut out for you. Not too many good ones, particularly if you want a galley up boat, and they all seem a bit overpriced. Only way to find out is to get on a few of them. Happy shopping!

You should definitely do this. that way, you'll be around here more and we can do more car stuff. LOL

I have a better idea, which will cost you less. Since my boat is over at PHYH, why don't you and Loretta spend a few nights on Blue Note? the air works, the head works, and I will commission the water system for you. Do that and then go back to Brigadoon. Problem solved.

Next?

Is the 58 a 15/10 or the wider boat the 19 ft 58 whih feels and is a much much bigger boat. We have been next to one all winter . It's like our 53 on steroids. That being said, I like my 71 naturals vs the 92's.

I also didn't think the aft stateroom was layed out the way we would like it, although it was a centerline rather than athwardships set up. Gally up or down of course is personal preference. While the engine room is larger the 92's make it feel smaller.

5' ittis its in our DNA

One thing you will gain, as I sit here mesmerizing my own boat...the flybridge....with a 58MY, you will get an absolutely HUGE flybridge that the 53 does not provide. Our large flybridge is where people gather...lots of people. Even with space reserved for the dinghy, there is a massive amount of flybridge available that neither the 53MY nor the 58YF offers. Is that worth it in your situation, probably not, but being a 58MY owner, I can say that my flybridge is one of the most used and valuable spaces on the boat. I had a wedding up there, and a sit-down dinner for 8 people served up there and it was awesome.
