Hatteras Model
42' LRC - Mark II (1980 - 1985)
Guys and Gals, I know it is not a Hatt but one of our clients owns a Trucking company ans is about to purchase this 58 ft. Viking sport fisher. I think it is in Destin or at tleast the broker is. The boat is a 1997, and I'm told it has Mans for power and they have about 2700 hours. I'm being told he is paying about $400,000. That sounds like way to much in these times and the engines scare me. Seems like I have read in the past about the Mans engines are bad about blowing up. Can anyone give me any info on these engines or the boat if you know of it. Would like to help my client if I can before he goes to deep.
Thanks,

That's about right for a real good one. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but the 58 Vikings are holding value compared to some of their competition. Hours are a bit on the high side for that money. I'm assuming she has the standard 1200HP MANs. Not my favorite engine but if they've been serviced and more importantly, updated, they're not bad. He'll be crying when it comes time to major them. Figure around 280K-300K for the pair as long as the cores are good. No that's not a typo that's what they can run you for a first class rebuild. If I was looking for a 58 Viking I'd look at this one. Very clean with tons of upgrades including recent majors. Owner is very knowledgeable and has spent a ton of money improving and maintaining her.

I have 1995 54 Viking with the 820hp 10 cyl Mans. I am on my 7th year with the boat and so far the Mans have not let me down. I have not let them down either because I have stayed on my maintenance and have done the 2 year service as scheduled. The service is about 14,000 but my experience has been (so far) that you don't touch them between 2 year services. I stretched it to 3 years on the last one. At one 2 year service we found a leaking intercooler and a new one was 8000. The parts are expensive but I here there are now aftermarket parts coming available that may be cheaper. The 820s are known as one of the better ones that MAN has made. The 1050's not as good. The 12 cylinders I think are suppossed to be reliable as well. The things to look for are does the boat have the cast iron oil cooler housing and covers. They came with aluminum that would fail and would dump all the oil before most people would catch it. The aluminum's thermal expansion was different than the cast iron block that it was attached to and that caused problems. Also have your buddy find out it the torsional couplings are the originals and if so are they silicon. The black rubber ones will fail and replacement material and labor is 20,000. If the engines have not had the 2yr/1000 hour service done tell your buddy to try to negotiate that money into the deal. Also Vikings of that vintage had a gelcoat problem. Some of the boats got painted under warranty some did not. Have your buddy look at that closely. I don't know what else to tell you about the Vikings and MANs. The windows have some leaks, and other typical boat issues but otherwise a good boat. I have always loved and wanted a Hatteras MY but I do not regret buying the Viking. It has been my favorite boat so far. I too was scared to death of the Mans but so far they have been a pleasant surprise. Good Luck.

Also have him check the transom around the hawse pipes. Most leak and the transom core gets wet.
